Alternative to MS Office under Catalina?
Posted by: davemchine
Date: June 04, 2020 12:19PM
I have Microsoft 2011 installed on all of my computers and I recently installed Catalina on my laptop. Now it won't let me run Microsoft 2011. I am an occasional user so I'm looking for an affordable upgrade path or maybe an open source alternative. Suggestions?

I'll be in the same boat as you sometime this year.

M$ ignores users like us. For some reason, they bundle their cloud service with M$ Office. I really don't know why. Who stores 1 TB of M$ Office files in the cloud?

I'd be willing to pay one or two bucks a month to run M$ Office on one machine without their cloud services.

I'm about 90% Google Docs / 10% MS Word these days, although I don't really work with files with images, tables, etc. I use a copy of Office provided through my work, so I probably would go all Google Docs or LibreOffice if I had to shell out my own money for Office.

.this

Brazil, France, & Norway among others discourage use of M$ products.
And although China (PRC) is among the biggest users of Windows & Office,
it's believed most of that is pirated warez. smiley-rpg028

I tried to use LO once, because I wanted the database component.

However, it requires Java, and no matter which version of the Java runtime environment I installed - the program complained that I didn't have Java installed.

When they dump Java, I might take another look.

If occasional, what about Apple's own free offerings, like Pages, Numbers, and Keynote?

I see MS Office 2019 Student sells for $100ish on ebay. Is that what I want? I'm not seeing $10 or $20 but maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing.

I could've sworn there was a topic thread on this a few weeks ago. With the same answers. Libre Office or search eBay for a MS Office student version or $10 discounted version.

Same thing happened to me when I went from High Sierra to Catalina, I lost being able to run MS Office 2011.

I just ended up jumping to MS Office 2019 and called it a day.

this is the nature of these listings. I've seen it 100 times. MS / Ebay doesn't like this type of listing because they go against the spirit / letter of whatever organization's contract with MS. The keys they sell are real keys. But because MS / Ebay are trying to crack down on them, their accounts get shut down after a few sales. The same person then pops back up under a new account with the same availability on the back-end. So, if you're "game" to try out one of the licenses (they work, at least as long as you don't need to reinstall in 6mo-1year or more), they will work. If they don't, eBay will refund you. Zero risk on the buyers part.

Been using Libre office forever -- it has a spreadsheet component.

You can install it, then go to preferences and turn off java, if you want.

If its just for personal use, I agree with google docs.

Base is the big offender.
LibreOffice for macOS
For certain features of the software - but not most - Java is required.
Java is notably required for Base.
Due to an issue, there are the following restrictions with Java:
on macOS 10.10 and newer, JRE isn't found, JDK is required
.

My understanding is Java will not be required in the near future.
Developers are at work transitioning the embedded storage engine from
HSQLDB to the Firebird SQL back-end.

Two choices for getting the JDK package:
Oracle
Direct Link to the .dmg

OR

JDK 14.0.1 General-Availability Release @ "java.net"
tar.gz file

Exactly - I had the same reservations but it worked out fine and then again for my son.

I got a cheap license for office 2019 windows version @ $25 on A Facebook group. Guy specified to install the software directly from Microsoft and call it in to activate.l instead of over internet. Took a while, but it worked.

As mentioned earlier, the licenses are legit.

Another option I didn’t see addressed: Running an older version of OS X/MS Office under a virtual machine.

It is what it is.
