The webpage for their new Hemp Headphone (an actual product) has some pretty fun puns scattered through the text:

Grado cartridges were the bomb. 50 years ago.

This makes Apple 's $1K Pro monitor stand look absolutely reasonable in price!

It is pretty funny. I have a hard time seeing how dynamic headphones are worth that kind of money though.

Seems like more than just a token effort.

The price seems more consistent with a cocaine fortified resin shell, rather than hemp.
With such a resin shell, I would expect the highs to be great, but the lows bad enough to make it not worth the cost.

A cry to be relevant.

Decent cans, pandering to a younger market.

Joseph Grado was a titan of the American audio landscape (he invented the moving coil cartridge), and led the industry in delivering a variety of inexpensive phono cartridges (starting at $15 retail) that blew away far more expensive cartridges. He also sold his pricey Signature series cartridges to the audiophile market. Over 30 years ago I had the pleasure of chatting with him and he sent me a sample of his $750 Signature cartridge for my evaluation. It was stunningly good, even taking into account its then-lofty price.

His nephew took over the company in 1990, and has been responsible for expanding the company into the headphone market. Their SR60 model (introduced around 1992 or so) rewrote the rules for value-for-dollar in the headphone market, delivering sound quality that crushed competing models at anywhere near the same price.

Like many audio companies, Grado also courts the super-luxury market segment (that’s where sales are very lucrative, even in slow economies). I look at some of the pricing in the audiophile segment and just shake my head, crazy stuff.

But $420 for the Hemp Headphone (completely made in the USA) is not unreasonable. There are numerous Sennheiser, AKG, Focal, Beyerdynamic and other manufacturer models at or above this price.
