I lobbed water balloons in the direction of my neighbor's chickens.

Not aiming to hit. They were headed across the vacant lot next door to my front yard where they like to scatter bark mulch all over the street and into my lawn. The balloons sent them running back to where they came.

I told the neighbors in the past that I did not want his free range chickens in my yard. When it continued, I called the county animal control and they came out and spoke to the owners. He's a prison guard who has a police flag on his front porch.

Am I going to H-E-double hockey sticks for my behavior?

There are some quite fine recipes for free range chickens..... not the least of which is one of my favorites; coq au vin. Just saying, if they should have an unfortunate "accident" on your property, there's no sense letting them go to waste.

Whatever you do, don't threaten to hold his cock and pullet until you get satisfaction. That might end poorly.

Depending on state laws, you could have the right to shoot the trespassers.

Seriously, though, I think you handled the situation well. It’s tough dealing with thoughtless and self righteous neighbors.

Cats don't bother our chickens much. Coyotes do.

Years ago, I stayed at a campground for several days. Close by, the next morning, roosters started crowing at 5 AM, and didn’t stop for quite a while. After two days of that, we found some bottle rockets and unleashed a barrage the next morning. The crowing stopped.
