Are we in the final days of OS X?

With transition to ARM, is it time to kill "ten"? I was amazed to see that OS X debuted in March 2001. Has it been that many years?

Come to think of it, I guess we're actually macOS 10.something now. Still, I wonder if the numbering system will change.

The foresight was more or less centered around Jobs, the company since has become a highly successful producer of consumer electronic gunk. The Proctor & Gamble of electronics.

I expect OS X to be around in some form for at least five years from when the Mac Pro started shipping.

Once they ship, I think the new Apple ARM laptops will allow a faster blending (dumbing down) of the "computer" side of the operating system.

I for one, do not want a Fisher-Price designed operating system.

They are moving the development of the system software to Colorado and the new system will be OS 420.

Id say early versions of OS X, with all the colors, shadows, 3D bubble buttons, etc etc were more like that than current.

Of course, current should look like Snow Leo.... so

I thought they were moving development to the new building in Seattle and calling it OS Millennial Playground.

There's zero reason to throw out OS X for such a transition.

N-OS X-tasy!
Don't forget that OS X is based on an OS that has even longer roots.

And is NOT dependent on a single processor family architecture.

Very little (< .0001%) of the UNIX/Darwin OS is written in assembler/machine language (mostly routines that make system calls, handle hardware interrupts, perform locking and synchronization); the rest is written in C, a relatively high-level language, that has been an industry/national/international standard for 45 years.

UNIX has been ported to every processor architecture (except, perhaps, some awful designs like the 1802), and its look-alike, Linux, has been ported to them as well.

The command shell (command line interface) and supporting libraries are all written in C or C++ (or Python, or Go, or Lua, or...) and port to a new architecture as soon as a C compiler can be bootstrapped on it.

There's life in the OS yet.

Guess I'll be keeping my 2011 MBP a little while longer...I suppose I can load some flavor of Linux on it when OS X browsers finally stop working.
