Family of Cooper's Hawks settled in the back yard

A while back we noticed a pair of Northern Harriers appeared to be setting up a nest in one of the oak trees, but a couple of weeks later they were gone and a pair of Cooper's Hawks had taken over the yard.

I've been seeing a lot of trips to the nest and a lot of fussing there recently, but just yesterday, I spotted little ones out of the nest.

here's a pair of youngsters

here are four hawks - the two on the right are in the above pics. The two on the left I thought were the adults, but now seeing them up close, they appear to be youngsters too.

Too bad the family that was here left. They were excellent vermin hunters.

Nice! I had a Cooper’s Hawk nesting on my Oregon place last summer. Pretty shy at first, but later one of them would regularly overfly me while I worked, as if to check up on me. Watching them fly through fairly thick woods was a real treat, and they put a good dent in the overpopulation of ground squirrels.

Had a nest in the yard of my previous house for two or three years.

Saw the fastest attack I've ever seen as one flew under the stairs to the 2nd floor porch picking off a ground feeding bird.

Watch a fascinating dance between a Cooper's hawk and a squirrel well up in a tree with the hawk flying around and the squirrel carefully keeping the tree trunk between them. Hawk finally flew away.

Oh man, how cool! We have them occasionally, but more red shouldered, sharp shinned, and red tailed.

Saw a couple of them this morning. Then only one in the afternoon. An hour later, they all seem to be gone. Do they really vacate the area that quickly?

Very cool! All I got this year was chickadees, and they're done and gone. There was a nest in the nearby park where I jog, but I didn't see them this year.
