June 23, 2003: Apple launches its gorgeous Power Mac G5, a powerhouse desktop computer with a perforated aluminum chassis that earns it the affectionate nickname the “cheese grater.”

Starting at an affordable $1,999 ($2,650 in today’s terms), the Power Mac G5 is the world’s first 64-bit personal computer. It’s also Apple’s fastest machine yet.

Putting the ‘power’ in Power Mac
Inside its distinctive, anodized aluminum case, the Power Mac G5 boasted IBM’s PowerPC G5 CPU architecture. This provided a massive step up from the aging Power Mac G4, which had been Apple’s high-end Mac from 1999 until 2002.

Steve Jobs promised that a 3 GHz model would be available “within 12 months,” but it never happened. In fact, a Mac with a processor capable of running at that speed did not arrive until Apple introduced the Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro in 2006.

In terms of other hardware features, the Power Mac G5 packed an AGP 8X video card, FireWire 800, gigabit Ethernet, up to half a terabyte of internal Serial ATA storage and a SuperDrive for authoring DVDs.

As far as professional-level computers went, very few could beat the Power Mac G5 in 2003. For trivia buffs, this was also Apple’s first computer to include USB 2.0 ports.

A lot of impressive engineering in that machine.

Too bad at the time we didn't realize what a dud the G5 CPU would turn out to be.

I think the first version of the Power Mac G5 was offered in 1.6GHz single, 1.8GHz single, and 2.0GHz dual CPU configurations. And according to Everymac.com, the 1.6 came standard with an 80GB hard drive and the 1.8 and 2.0 had a 160GB drive.

I think the Mac Pro was (is) great, but it uses much of the engineering from the PM G5, so it's debatable where the real credit goes.

I also think the MacBook Pros and Airs are well done.

I'm looking at you, Adobe. CS3 should have been 64 bit.

The fact that CC 2018 installer is still 32bit is criminal.

My G5 is still my go-to desktop running 24/7. It’s the last desktop I bought for my use. We have bought iMacs but none for me.

To be clear on the veracity of this alleged incident, I did not own that lens,

Quad G5? Isn't that liquid cooled? It hasn't blown up or leaked?

DP 2.5, DCDP(quad) 2.5, and DP 2.7 were all water cooled. There is the early sucky system and a later less sucky system. I don't remember off hand when they switched.

My quad shows no signs of leaking yet. The 2.5 did.

If I could find a 2.3 for a reasonable price that would be my choice.

I loves me some cheese graters. Except for a short (2 week) timeframe where I tried an iMac, I've had a cheese grater since the DP 2 G5 came out. Had the G5 for about 6 years, then a Mac Pro 3,1 for about 7 years. Been using the 5,1 for the last 3. That means I'll probably end up with the latest Mac Pro in a few years.

Only the Quad G5 has the good water cooled system, all the other top end water cooled ones leak and should long, long gone. Yes, IMO the 2.3 Dual Core is the one to get as the fastest air cooled model, but it does seem that Apple finally got the cooling right on the Quads.
