Washington, DC (CNN)The Segway PT, which earned a place in pop culture but never realized its creators' world-changing ambitions, will come to an end this summer.
China-based Ninebot, which acquired Segway in 2015, will halt production of the PT, short for Personal Transporter, on July 15. Twenty-one staffers will be laid off at its Bedford, New Hampshire plant. Fast Company first reported the news.
The Segway PT made a splash in December 3, 2001 when it was unveiled on Good Morning America. Inventor Dean Kamen said that an urban transportation revolution was coming and cars would be obsolete. Kamen felt it was absurd to use 4,000-pound cars and trucks for short trips.
But last year the Segway PT accounted for only 1.5% of Ninebot's revenue, according to Tony Ho, vice president of global business development at Segway. With a price tag starting at $6,000 and sometimes reaching $10,000, only police departments and tour groups could afford it, he said.

"It was a great invention 20 years ago," said Ho. "Now it seems a bit outdated." He added that some police departments have shifted to Ninebot's cheaper electric scooters. Ninebot is also ending production of a three-wheeled Segway device that was designed for community policing.

There are $500 scooters that are basically just as good as the Segway.

Yes, now.

Nowhere to be found when the Segway hit the streets.

There just wasn't much market for them, as much as Segway tried to find one.

They were/are pricey.

And too many idiots parroting 'People are going to get run over!'

It was the sheer enormity of Segway related crashes that did them in.

As are mall cops the world around.

It didn't help Segway much when Government stepped in and started limiting where they could be used, who could use them and what riders needed to be wearing while using them. And when they first came out I never could understand how they thought the things were going to "change the world". For short trips one could just walk, longer trips they just weren't all that practical especially when one needed to pick up things at the store or carry things with them. Plus, where to park them while in the store or at work? Expensive gimmick toy for Yuppies.

GGD,

No surprise. With the advent of hoverboards, the segway was on its way out. The price range of even halfway decent hoverboards is less than $200.00. One of the better ones is $250. Why get a segway when a hoverboard ain't too expensive.

I remember when it first came out. Katie Couric demonstrated it on the today show. It was her one big moment in "journalism".

Too many unforced injuries and just too expensive for most people… It was a technology in search of a need.

Wasn't it something Steve Jobs thought should be better than it was?

“I think it’s coming along,” said Tim, “though we expect—” “I think it sucks!” said Jobs.

His vehemence made Tim pause. “Why?” he asked, a bit stiffly.

“It just does.”

“In what sense?” said Tim, getting his feet back under him. “Give me a clue.”

“Its shape is not innovative, it’s not elegant, it doesn’t feel anthropomorphic,” said Jobs, ticking off three of his design mantras.

“You have this incredibly innovative machine but it looks very traditional.”

Definition of bad optics?

When the owner of Segway at the time, Jimi Heselden, died after driving his Segway off a cliff and into a river.

Why did Ninebot purchase Segway instead of just blatantly copying it as per the norm?

Is it a coincidence that Segway was purchased by a Chinese company in 2015. And shortly after cheap "hoverboards" were being mass produced and shipped out of China. Hmmm...

I remember when Code Name: Ginger was all the buzz on the World Wide Web. We loved talking about it and thinking about what it could be. Then it came out, and the word "meh" was invented. Haha.

This was to own the IP. Was a super smart move. They will be the big player in this market for decades to come.
