Old music you like - that you're "not supposed to" like

Kind of a breakout of the confessions thread.

Jane Child, Don't Wanna Fall in Love
[www.youtube.com]

I love the beat of those kinds of songs. In the same vein is Rock Steady by The Whispers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPJz3syNbtE) and to some extent, A-ha with Take on Me. All three, I think, are one-hit wonders (the Whispers did other stuff but nothing you could really consider a hit).

I'm sure I'll think of some others.

Off topic, but in the video a Mac SE makes several appearances in her recording studio.

Yeah, probably cutting edge at the time.

I have really come to love bluegrass in my mid-age. I was watching the O Brother Where art Thou concert and found myself humming along to Peasall Sisters singing In The Highways. Suddenly my self of 30 years ago shouted, 'why are you listening to this crap??!!'

I didn't have a good answer... but I kept listening. Not that I love this song, but I have no problem listening to it now. The 20-something me would have left the room screaming.

It's like the human version of Alvin and the Chipmunks! smiley-laughing001

The music doesn't do anything for me but the kids are so darn cute! I have to admit, for their ages, they are better musically than just about any kids I have heard.

I already confessed to liking Yanni, and now you what more stuff to belittle me over?

Ain't gonna say nothing more about this or this or this.

The other two I'll give you, but Just My Imagination by the Temptations is a true classic, definitely not something you're "not supposed to" like.

“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Eli Weisel

OK, this falls sorta in this thread and sorta in the other, but I confess to liking certain Christian Rock, despite the fact that I'm nowhere close to being a Christian:

Oh, and big a-ha fan here. I really wouldn't consider them a one-hit wonder. At the time, they also had a hit with "The Sun Always Shines on TV" and their later stuff is (not surprisingly) a bit more mature musically and also quite good:

Most of that late '80s pop/R&B stuff always sounded overproduced to me.

P.S. I'm sure the Jets have a place somewhere on that particular list of yours. smiling smiley

I liked ABBA and The Carpenters. I’m sorry, I do.

I'm like that with a lot of different types of music.

Good stuff.

The Carpenters haven't had a resurgence, because they never had a recent(ish) movie made with their music wink smiley, but their production quality was unequaled.

I thought of another, of which I find myself singing totally out of the blue surprisingly often:

Mele Kalikimaka ("is Hawaii's way to say Merry Christmas to you.")

It doesn't seem to have much if any correlation to Christmas, it just pops into my head. grinning smiley

Not exactly old, but my wife looked at me weird when I got all excited about finding Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's CD at a Goodwill outlet. His version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" always makes me tear up.

Never a fan of ABBA, but I also like the Carpenters. Karen Carpenter was an amazing talent.

I hear ya. Fernando was ear pap but it had a huge hook. The YouTube video has over 81 million views.

The '70s were such a mixed bag for pop music.

"Billy, Don't Be a Hero"? Wins a medal!
"Fernando"? Latrine patrol!

"The Night Chicago Died"? Lord have mercy!
"Seasons in the Sun"? Winter cometh!!

"Dark Lady" YES!
"If You Leave Me Now"? More like "Kill me now!"

"Knock Three Times"? I think I will, thanks!
"Let 'Em In"? I'd rather not!

It is what it is.
