Can of diced tomatoes spewed when opened. Toss?

The expiration date was 8/19. There was a minor spew when I clamped down the opening. They smell OK and the is no rust or bulging on the can.

Was this a hiss or a spew? A hiss indicates a vacuum as would be expected, a spew indicates that gases were building and thus it has begun decomposing. If you are unsure, toss it. If you eat it it could be nothing or it could be botulism. The first incidence costs you nothing, but the second one can be ... expensive ... Your choice.

Edit: Botulism toxin is colorless, odorless, and tasteless (if I remember right). And cooking it doesn’t denature it.

Canned tomatoes are cheap - I'd toss just to be safe...

Yes, toss.

Compost and recycle the can. Pressure in canned goods is a sign of decomposition, which can produce some very nasty toxins.

Hiss, ok
Spew, toss

Hiss, ok
Spew, toss

And your life hangs on the difference between the two. Choose wisely.

Things packed under heavy vacuum will hiss, but it should be slight and very short. I have definitely used cans of tomatoes a year old before. Boil a little longer, if you want.

I'll add, if it's sharp tasting, I'd toss it.

Toss the can now, or toss your cookies later!

(In all likelihood you're probably fine, but wtf, it's 89 cents for a fresh can.)

I say it's OK, and the hiss was the vacuum sucking in atmosphere.

If it were the contents under pressure enough to make a hiss, you would have seen the can bulging.

Undamaged, that can would have been good for a few more years.

IF it is bad in less than a year, it was contaminated at canning.

You could seal it in a zip lock bag and put it in the 'fridge and get another can from the store.

Open it to see if you heard correctly.

But– as Will says, a fresh can is cheap.

If it passed the sniff test, I would probably still use them.

Sniff test does not help much for botox. It is probably fine, but anything hermetically closed or canned is much more dangerous than the fresh food that you can really apply sniff test to. On the other hand, prolonged cooking at boiling temperature will probably inactivate most of the toxin.
