Why the iPad still doesn't have a calculator app

Steve Jobs nixed the calculator from Apple’s original tablet because it was lame — nothing more than the iPhone app awkwardly blown up to iPad size. But that doesn’t explain why the company failed to craft a proper iPad calculator app in the decade since the tablet’s launch.

When the wraps came off iPadOS 14 at WWDC 2020 on Monday, there was still no calculator app to be seen. Federighi admits that Apple just hasn’t come up with an app that would make people say, “This is the greatest iPad calculator app.”

“There’s some things that we have not done because we would want to do something really distinctly great in that space,” the Apple VP explained. “We want to do it when we can do it really, really well. And we honestly just haven’t gotten around to doing it great.”

But he didn’t slam the door on the idea of an iPad calculator. “That day may come,” Federighi said.

And I guess they haven't realized that 99% of their customers would rather just have a built-in calculator app even if it isn't "the greatest" just so they don't have to wade through all the junk in the app store to find one...

I've use the iPhone calculator but can't recall ever noticing there wasn't one on my iPad!

Alternative: if you're on line use DuckDuckGo's calculator function.

Yes, search google for calculator to bring up their calculator then set that as a home screen button.

Swipe down in home screen and type the calculation. Or Hey Siri, half a pound to ounces, or 20 bucks to Canadian...

nothing more than the iPhone app awkwardly blown up to iPad size.

And that's I'll I want.

Seriously.

For awhile, I was fine with many 'Phone apps 'blown up' to iPad size.

Creating an iPad only version of many simple apps usually means adding a lot of function I don't need, at the expense of a simple, elegant UI.

I don't like many iPad apps that have a side bar of additional tools, info, etc., that can't be hidden.

Mail is one example. I'd rather have the option of the 'Phone version.

My back had two versions of its app, one for each device.

I used the 'Phone version on my iPads as it was clean, simple, and did just what I wanted.

It was dropped and I was left to use the iPad version on the iPad, which is cluttered and thus annoying.

And now some devs' 'Phone apps will run on the iPad, but won't go to 2X. WTF?

And with the different screen sizes, if an app does go to 2X, it only fills top to bottom, not left to right.

So devs don't want to support two different apps for two different devices.

Maybe that's Apple telling them what's what, maybe they want to reduce their workload.

Craig, I'd be more than happy getting a very basic, clean calculator app, instead of making me use third-party versions.

I don't mind 'no third-party watch faces'. In fact I applaud it. I don't want third-party calculator apps.

And give me an elegant analog clock face for the iPhone and iPad, ffs.

Hey Siri, what’s the tip for 56 dollars?

But interesting...asking my Siri for 10% of 56 dollars refers me to the Wolfram Alpha app.
Dropping the “dollars” from the Q gets me a 5.6...

I use the DeWalt calculator app on my iPad. Full of useful features. I should look to see what a decent HP type calculator app costs. HP calculators were about the only HP product I liked using.
