Finally watched the AppleTV Amazing Stories episode filmed at my office...

It's episode 4, "The Rift," and it's... not very good. It is very faithful to the original series though. Like the '85 version, it looks great, has that Spielberg high-budget sheen, no expense was spared in production values (I saw the props first-hand, and they're totally believable up close). It's all-around technically proficient, and the actors are good. But the script... isn't.

Very very very familiar. Just not all that good. The same hand-waving exposition that doesn't make any sense, same unearned fantasy ending without laying the groundwork. Just like back in the 80's, it's disappointing. All those resources but they couldn't be bothered to hire decent writers.

There was some filming in Old Fourth Ward last year close to my apartment. Wonder if that was the show.

Could have been anything. Cobra-Kai shoots around my neighborhood; Daniel-san's house is about a mile away. Atlanta became Hollywood East over the last decade or so.

Before Covid-19 shut everything down, there were film crews near us on a monthly basis. Neighbors three houses down had their house emptied out and used for a commercial. A house under construction two streets over was used in the movie Instant Family. While they were filming Mark Wahlberg almost ran into me driving a black Mustang convertible in the neighborhood.

The story is fIrst priority, the rest is necessary, but not sufficient!

Picasso in his studio after the liberation of Paris, taken by my friend and mentor.

So weird for Spielberg, who certainly knows this for cinema..... television just isn't his genre as a writer/director.

Ah, actually he first made a name for himself directing TV.

He didn't take that show seriously the first time around either. He referred to it as "Tender Vittles" (TV) on the set.

True, but that was before he was telling his own stories, or really crafting the productions. He was noted for his interesting camera work and rapport with actors, but what made him famous was his cinematic storytelling, which was presaged in his TV movie work but really got underway with Jaws.

I think this was on a big placard on the wall when they were making Doctor Who in the 70s. (see also; monster which is actually just some wire wrapped in aluminum foil)

Well you said "television isn't his genre as a writer/director", and that's clearly not the case.

See Duel, which he directed but, like Jaws, he didn't write.

Jaws made him a household name, but it doesn't mean he wasn't just as capable in television.

And don't forget he's misstepped in films: see 1941, Hook and more to the point, his Twilight Zone movie (with its Amazing Stories format) also did poorly.

p.s.
pres·age - verb [with object]
(of an event) be a sign or warning that (something, typically something bad) will happen
