Many websites think I'm somewhere other than where I am..

When browsing or shopping on my Mac, some websites offer up suggestions for store locations in cities quite a ways away from me.

In those cases, I have to find and manually choose a store that's actually near me and set that as 'my' store.

From the look of it, my zip code must have two numbers transposed.

Checking my Mac's Privacy tab, Enable Location Services is checked, but none of the default apps is checked, and there are no others listed.

It's not all sites.

I only shop on one Mac and haven't noticed this behavior on any others, or my 'Phone.

I checked Contacts and I don't have my address info in there and have no clue where to look for the cause.

Any ideas?

Usually has to do with where the service provider's main line dips into the internet, for lack of a better way to put it.

e.g., I'm with Comcast, and though I'm not in the city, it will show stores closer to where the offices in the city are, because that's how it's identifying me. A little maddening with some sites where, even if I'm logged in & have previously selected my "home store", will change it to the location-aware one.

(BTW, it's spelled < y'all >.)

Same happens to me. Xfinity must connect to the internet about 20 miles from where I actually live.

I had that issue when I moved houses. What worked for me was to enable and use find my iPhone and be connected to the router at the same time. I don’t remember how long it took, but it eventually got fixed.

A few issues:

1. Your browser may not be passing on location info to the websites. (This is a good thing.)

2. Your ISP is large enough that your IP address doesn't tell them exactly where you live. (This is a good thing.)

3. You may have an ad-blocker that's preventing them from pulling your personal info from the browser or from other sites. (This is a good thing.)

Modern browsers (Catalina +) are now capable of reading a user's ethereal levels, and I suspect Safari realizes you are a cosmic man, able to transcend space/time and be in more than one place at one moment.

That's my guess anyways.

If I'm on comcrap w/o VPN, the location can vary between three locations depending
on how they're routing traffic.

On PIA-VPN NYC, google shows NYC but the forum servers don't play nice.
Switch to the PIA East (NJ), google shows Europe but the forum servers do play nice!
dunno smiley

A few months ago I followed some h@><0r instructions to goof up Google's location identifying process. Now ever time I pull up Google Maps, it puts me in Belgium. smiley-rpg028

I have PIA but it's not always in use as I take a huge hit in throughput, mainly because I don't have a lot to start with.

When I do use it, am not any where near where various sites think I am when I'm not using it.

So I guess I'll just live with it, since it may not be something I entered incorrectly somewhere.

Did you buy your router new or second-hand?

On my iPhone, and occasionally the MacBookPro as well, I'm consistently two hundred miles away, in the NW suburbs of Chicago.

But I don't mind, I'm much closer to IKEA this way...
