New(ish) Apple Watch Series 3... Need new glass... :(
Posted by: spacescape

My son (diabetic) has an Apple Watch Series 3 which he received as a gift. The glass needs to be replaced and it's about $229 to repair through Apple. Is this the only reliable option?

I've replaced a couple watch screens, not too terribly hard. But the screens via iFixit for the Series 3 run $150-$170 and you can get a renewed Series 3 on Amazon for as low as $170 for the 38mm.

Probably best to sell the broken screen one on ebay and buy a used one on Craigsilst.

For $300 you can get a series 5 with all the newer features.

I second the sell and buy a replacement. The battery will degrade to the point of uselessness shortly. My Watch 1 battery lasts maybe an hour.

Also true. The 40 mm has been $299 several times in the last couple of months from all the big names.

The 5 is a sweet ride... if hes accident prone, could always buy a case or screen guard for it...

I would not have it repaired for $229.

I'd get a new Watch.

I would go this route as well. I'd be concerned about how long the Series 3 will be supported.

Maybe your watch is one of these? Free repair by Apple apparently.

I lived (still use it today on and off) with a series 0 watch with a bad crack (not a gouge) across the face. I put it in a protective case from amazon and three years later it is still going strong. Battery life has not been effected. I need to watch out for water since I am sure it has lost whatever protection it had. My two cents is to hold onto the watch and save the price of repair if you want to. I suspect that Apple is on the cusp of releasing a whole bunch of different health monitoring hardware based on the watch. (Ie: different models tailored to different needs. Maybe even one for monitoring sugar.) my three cents. ????
