Online tax filing?

Looking for an online tax preparation/filing site, there was a thread earlier mentioning taxact and credit karma if I remember correctly.

Any recommendations? I need to file fed and state for myself and for my dearly diseased Mother. Nothing too fancy incomewise for either of us.

Thanks in advance!

I use Tax Slayer for my mom, but I would look at the IRS site and see if there are any free file sites that work for you.
Many Free File site will still charge for the state return, or they used to.

Everyone pretty much charges for state filing but will have free options for simple fed returns.

Tax act
HR Block
Tax slayer
Turbotax
Credit Kharma

Whichever floats your boat, they are all pretty much the same now.

have used taxact for many years but i file a couple of schedule C’s and it’s gotten real pricey.

i’ve had my son used Credit Karma tax for the past few years with no issues. i used CK for my deceased brothers taxes last year with no issues. This year i used CK for my taxes and also filled the info in on TaxAct. the refund was $20 lower on CK but there was an aspect i think they were more spot on than TaxAct so i went filed that.

CK is free for federal and state.

I'll toss in a vote for FreeTaxUSA [www.freetaxusa.com]
Free Federal, even with a Schedule C. State costs me $12.95 i think. Been using it the past several years.

These are free. If you go to (say) TurboTax web site they’ll eventually put up a pay wall

Credit Karma will be free for your Federal AND State.

You just can't do multiple states in one return.

I did just that, thank you. IRS recommended TurboTax or OnLine Taxes for my FREE fed and state tax returns. On a whim, I tried both. The return totals were exactly the same, so I went with TurboTax. TT had a more polished user experience than OLT but they did about the same exact things if in slightly different ways. TT did have a nice feature in that a PDF of your W-2s (scanned in my case) can be uploaded and their AI fills in all the blanks on the 1040. Be nice if they did 1099s too, alas.

Thanks everyone for your advice!

P.S. We will see how easily my Mom's returns go, hope my smile does not get turned upside-down. Thanks to graylocks for some good info.
