Tom Hanks disappointed with Apple TV+ 'Greyhound' release

The release of the Tom Hanks movie "Greyhound" on Apple TV instead of cinemas is an "absolute heartbreak" to the film star, an interview reveals, with Hanks also using the opportunity to poke fun at Apple's PR policies during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In the days before the July 10 premiere of "Greyhound" on Apple TV+, veteran actor Tom Hanks has to take on the usual gauntlet of interviews and public appearances expected of such a star. However, the movie's marketing is being tempered by the continuing coronavirus pandemic, which has impacted not only the interview, but the release of the movie and Hanks' life.

Originally intended for a theatrical release, Greyhound is instead being offered through the Apple-owned streaming service, due to COVID-19 social distancing measures closing theaters around the world. The move to the small screen for a production meant for theaters has led to disappointment for Hanks who refers to the change in plans as "an absolute heartbreak" in an interview with the Guardian.

"I don't mean to make angry my Apple overlords, but there is a difference in picture and sound quality," offers Hanks.

I'd have loved to see the on the big screen.

I feel bad for Hanks.

This is not much better than a straight to DVD release.

Well maybe a straight to BR release.

It does suck, but it's not as if his is the only movie that finds itself in this situation.

If the film is good enough or popular enough, chances are it will have a theater release once this COVID stuff is behind us (assuming any movie theaters survive).

It is what it is.

Out of curiosity, without any theatrical releases, what does that do to Oscar eligibility ?

The Academy has changed its rules for this season.

Go to the theater and watch these movies when it's safe.

Add it to the list right after Hamilton.

I imagine Hanks isn't bitter, regardless of how disappointed he is.

There are a lot of films in the same position and may be more yet, but as the writer and star, his disappointment isn't surprising.

Yes, I was thinking about that.

It would be slightly disappointing to see it on the small screen first, but I'd get over it.

Of course if my small screen were a 65" OLED with better than good audio, I'd probably get over it a lot easier.

I'm curious how the Home Cinema in his home is equipped...

He might have a 65" OLED, in the kitchen!

that little shack may have its own cinema, eh?

yeah, true enough that he is not the only person who is affected by this situation, so only a little sad for him.

I'm sure he just wanted them to wait to premiere the film. An Apple + screening means that only a small fraction of households have access to see the film at all. That would be highly disappointing.

I for one don't begrudge Mr. Hanks his home. He works hard at his craft, and has massive talent. And from all reports he's just a really Nice Guy.

Being stuck on Apple+ is likely the biggest disappointment. If it was Disney, Netflix, Hulu, it wouldn't be as bad. Apple+ has a much smaller subscriber base which means fewer are going to see it.

Those that want to see it can easily do so.

so only a little sad for him.

No, I bet his sadness is the movie not seeing the big screen and adequate sound system, and that all those who do see it won't be seeing it under the best possible circumstances, or at least much better than the typical home viewing setup ("theater" would be a stretch for most of us).

I've no doubt he sees that movie or most movies as more art than commerce, and whether it was Apple, Disney, Hulu, or Netflix, his disappointment would be the same.

Exactly.

I don't see him as a "Well, I got mine!" kind of guy, even though he has his.

And my mention of a 65" OLED set had nothing to do with Hanks, who could afford a 262" micro-LED, or a puny 88" QLED (for the guest bathrooms).
