My dad basically invented something that's probably in a lot of your houses.

So what is it?

Geez, no one really famous in my fam, unless you consider Great Grand Dad who rode with the Maine Cavalry during the Civil War.

Family history says he lined up after one of the large battles to be inspected by President Lincoln.

He came home from the war at 49 years old and took a 16 year old bride.

I remember Great Granny, she lived to be 107. Her daughter, (my Grandmother) got peeved with my older brother after a visit. When it was time to leave, my bro said: "Goodbye Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Grandma!" Our Grandma told him: "Oh, she isn't that great!" Just as she said it, she realized what she said.

We all had a tremendous laugh!

“Pack” Duncan, Civil War scout.

Escaped from slavery, joined the Union Army, became a scout. During the war eventually went back to his master’s holdings and killed him. Gathered up his love and her mother and rode off with them riding his late master’s best horse.

Retired out of the army after he was wounded in the side by a saber thrust from a confederate general and left for dead. Became a cobbler after the war, and for a time had a small town named after him; eventually absorbed into a larger town.

Wow. Crazy story. If you have a link to book or website that goes into the details of this guy's life, please post it. I'd read it.

My dad is well known in the field of Flood prediction for his seminal work on the Missouri river flood in 1972 (I helped him with some of his field work and analyses), and his scientific proofs that the current (and still) flood control methods make floods worse. His 1973 paper gets cited all over the place.

Would he be cbelt2?

Ummm, not much of anyone...

Which sums up Millard Fillmore to a 't'.

"Uncle Mil" got roasted by Johnny Carson one night, and our whole family got a kick out of bits like "They found a number of his personal effects, including the ID card he used to get into the White House. See, none of the guards could remember who he was..."

Curious question. My family may be related to the guy who was a political polemicist and then became Lenin's companion, all this going on around 1905. He worked to smuggle Lenin into Russia in the "closed train" trip in the pre-war and pre-revolution era. I learned about this quite by chance after attending a silent film festival which happened to be doing a retrospective on pre-revolution Russian films and early Soviet era films, and out of this experience I did some reading of history and a name popped up.

A member of my family discovered the L-strand transcripts of the human mitochondrial genome, but that was me, and it was well before there was any inkling that the human mitochondrial genome can through mutation be a source of lots of different genetic diseases.

Many folks with family roots in NC & SC have Scots-Irish ancestors.

My great-grandfather was a bartender, which, given the makeup of this board, should count as famous.

Only if he was also a pimp, so he could provide both hookers AND booze.

Mary, who had a little lamb, was a great-great-great aunt on my father's side (IIRC).
There is a statue of the lamb on the town common in Sterling, MA. There is some controversy regarding the origin of the poem.
