Why does Airdrop suck so much?

Seems like a good idea. I use it all the time to send photos from my phone to my Mac. That is...when it works. I can literally choose an image on my phone, airdrop it to my Mac, go back and choose another photo and my Mac is no longer available to airdrop. Literally, like 2 seconds later.

I think it is amazing and have never really had any issues with it.

I've had similar issues. Although usually it just doesn't work in the first place. Same with Image Capture. After several years of working reliably, that only works once in a blue moon.

I'm still on High Sierra on a late 2013 MBP. Most recent version of iOS on an 11 Pro.

I've had occasional issues with my 'Phone and my 2012 mini.

It wouldn't work at all util I went from Mavs to Sierra.

None with my 2012 MB or 2015 iMac.

I haven't had occasion to use it with my 2018 mini.

'Phone to HomePod has been perfect, so far.

I encounter problems with Macs that have big generation-gaps, either hardware or software.

For example, a modern T2 MBP might have some trouble communicating with a 2012 iMac even if they're running the same OS.

Or two 2014 iMacs might have trouble if one is running Sierra and the other Mojave.

I really only Airdrop between my iPhone 8 and my late 2016 MBP. So that's what? About a year apart. Running the latest iOS and Mojave on the Mac. In my experience Airdrop is the epitome of intermittent. Sometimes it shows my MBP as a source to Airdrop to. Sometimes it shows nothing is available to Airdrop to. And I'm literally sitting at my desk with my phone about a foot away from my laptop. So it's not like there's interference or...who knows what.

Yeah, I most problems I have seen are between devices that have significantly different versions of Bluetooth/Wi-Fi. It can take a few minutes for the connections to clean up after themselves, the modern version of when your 56K modem starts to retrain and can't decide on a valid speed.

I've never had problems with it. I've shown clients and colleagues how to use it and they love it. Some have even commented that they wish they could use it with a pc.

we use it occasionally, but is there an advantage to airdrop over sending/sharing the item via messenger? size limitations, perhaps?

No size limit that I’m aware of. It uses Bluetooth to create a peer to peer Wi-Fi connection.
