It's a method of torturing the data until it confesses, often used in social sciences and behavioral sciences.

Can anybody make heads or tails out of this:

Looks like so much bafflegab to me. I assume there are statistics behind the weighting factors, but without regular restudy and relevance tests they are irrelevant.

heh.. I saw that too.

Just clicked to see how a question like this got 12 responses so fast. big grin smiley

Huh. Looks like you can infer quite a bit of raw basics, like meanings behind the labels, maybe even the general thrust of the objective, but I’d need to know a hell of a lot more to say I even started to “understand” it.

Ok, based on Professor Google:

The rectangles represent actual measured variables.
The large circles represent inferred variables, based on the measures variables. I guess it's something like, "If you have a measured variable like {rectangle}, then you have to have an inferred variable like {large circle}, which influences {rectangle} by the number next to the arrow pointing to the rectangle.

Lines with arrows mean relationships, something like "There is a negative 20% (or -20 SOMETHING) connection between the top large circle and the bottom one."

The small circles represent some kind of margin of certainty or margin of error for the rectangles they point to.

To a first approximation, this chart is saying:
You measured how much people attribute Positive Events or Negative Events to causes that are internal, stable or global.

From those measurements, we can infer that there are latent variables for "Attributional Style" for Positive Events, and for Negative Events. Both of those Attributional styles influence Optimism, and Optimism influences depression. We can verify the inference for Optimism by LOT and GESS, and for Depression by BDI and Zung.

I just wish I know what the numbers REALLY mean--is that -.20 negative 20%, or something else altogether.....

Thanks, all. I shall persevere. "Onward into the fog!"
