I need some hookers
Posted by: bazookaman

I have these two sculptures I want to hang and they are oddly shaped with two holes in the back. The best solution I can think of is something like a pegboard hook with the hook sticking straight out and no more than 1/4" in diameter. Or something like that. But obviously not on a pegboard.

Something like this, but again, NOT for pegboard. Like a wall mount variant.

Just put a nail in the wall.

These work better than just nails:

Or for heavier items, maybe coathooks?

Then you can use anchors and screws, too.

sculptures ? Depending on weight you may need to use anchor bolts or screws into the wall studs. If the mounting holes are irregular, create a paper pattern of the back with the holes marked, and use that to establish your mounting hole pattern on the wall.

If your area is seismically active more heroic mounting methods may be appropriate.

I initially used nails. One in a stud and one not in a stud just to keep the item at an angle. I used a BIG nail b/c...overkill. I didn't want them falling. But this time around I really just wanted something that didn't involve driving a spike into the wall. Plus I'd need to find a giant finish nail b/c the one I had with a head on it would barely fit through the hole on the back of the piece.

The first one is what I initially though of and would work if the "tongue" was longer.

The second one would work if it was JUST one hook or the other. Not both, b/c it needs to lay flat against the wall. Plus they're too wide to fit through the holes on the back of the piece.

You could use a SMALL section of pegboard that would be hidden behind he sculptures, with shortened pegboard hooks.

The other option s to create your own mounting hooks and have an automotive bod shop welder make them. Many of those guys are really talented. Appeal to their ego and wallet and ask them to create what you drew up.

There are many varieties of coathooks, and you could easily adapt the standard double hook by cutting off one part.

If you're handy with woodwork, you could get a block of hardwood, mount the pegboard hooks in it, and attach the block to the wall with screws.

Can you run a heavy wire through the two holes in the back and then hang the item from the wire?
I have used those three nail picture hangers to hang VERY heavy mirrors. I usually use two, just to be on the safer side

I second MyLynn's suggest of those triple nail thingies. They're amazingly strong, and low profile.

How big are the holes in the art piece? How deep into the art piece could they go? How far apart (obviously, if not 16 inches, both wouldn't end up in wall studs)?

b-man's application should be noted before making suggestions.

He said there are two oddly shaped holes in the back of (each?) sculptures.

The hook of whatever is used has to be no more than 1/4" in diameter.

The headless nail idea seems viable.

I'd want to be able to remove them easily, so I'd look for screws and anchors if needed that fit the holes.

A sleeve could be placed on the threads so the sculpture isn't damaged at all.

How heavy are they?

Or < 1/4" diameter wood screws with the head ground down enough to fit into the sculpture but still allow it to be removed with a Phillips screw bit.

I would put a wire through the holes with a ring on the wire, then you can hang the ring, like a key ring, on one of the three nail hooks.

Assuming they hang vertically. If horizontal hanging no need for the ring

I like the wire idea. Ideally I want to hang them at an angle.

Ceramic? Maybe they'd like lying flat on a hutch shelf.

Make it an active display...

Instead of wire, use heavy fishing line. What with heavy trucks going by, the subtle vibrations will make them change angle every few days.

I'm surprised that no one so far has mentioned these, which are just great:

... depending on how you want to orient the sculptures, you can arrange how you like, what angle, etc.

To me, it depends on how they're mounted. The 3M hangers are plenty sturdy, so long as you use multiple of them (so that you're distributing weight) and that the surface you're attaching them to is reasonably clean and smooth. If really concerned, you could also always add something from above to make sure that, if somehow the hangers were to fail, that the hung item wouldn't get damaged.
