Disk Utility in Sierra is garbage

I knew that, but forgot and also didn't know quite how bad it was.

Restore won't work to clone your boot drive... because DU insists on unmounting it first. 10.9 and earlier could do it without unmounting. (Technically, it is 10.10 and earlier; DU didn't go to crap until 10.11 but so few use 10.10.)

I couldn't get Restore to clone to a partition that had 20GB more available than it needed; it kept telling me there wasn't enough space. But I could install to that partition and migrate everything over just fine (moving the same amount of data as a Restore would have).

When you can actually do a Restore, DU can't be bothered to give you an estimate of how long it will take. Sure, estimates could be wildly inaccurate but at least you had some clue.

AllGold,

As others have said, buy CCC for that job. It is well worth it, IMHO. I gave up on DU Restore years ago because it took so long and could not reliably do the job.

Remember how when you were little
you could just rip off your diaper and
just run around naked and everyone
thought it was so cute and funny?

Anyway, I need bail money.
