Hey cheapskates - post pads for basement playroom

We have a section of our basement that the kids use as a play area. One problem - metal posts that hold up the floor above. A google search for `post pads` reveals that padding for end zone posts and similar costs about $150 a pop. x3 posts = $450. Thats about $400 more than I was hoping to spend.

Any advice on a cheaper solution?

What is the diameter of the posts.
The black foam pipe insulation might be able to be cut and pieced around the posts, if they aren’t too large
You can also buy foam in big pieces at a store like JoAnn Fabrics. You could cut to fit them maybe put fabric or plastic on the outside and attach with Velcro.

Don't know how robust they need to be but here is a "light duty" post pad for a 3.5" diameter post. It is just under 4 feet tall (I guess you could stack them for an 8 foot pole) with 1/2 inch foam padding for just under $19 w/Prime.

You may want something with thicker padding.

Egg shell (or similar) mattress topper from a big box store, wrapped a couple times around the post? (It's back to college season, they're probably on sale.)

When my kids were young, I wrapped the columns in a couple layers of carpet padding.

Wrap in plastic rope, jute, or ski rope. It may not be as flexible as foam but it will still protect, work well with any humidity and make them spartan tough.

Flatten/deconstruct corrugated Amazon boxes. Wrap around posts and affix with duct tape. Keep wrapping more and more until the posts are a foot in diameter.
