Worth saving? OWC 7200rpm 1.5TB external hard drive. Will need $50 adapter.

1.5TB OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro 'Quad Interface' 7200RPM 32MB Cache
eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB2

I was using the external drive for backups to my now retired MacMini 2014 using a Firewire800 cable connected to a Firewire800 to Thunderbolt2 adapter ($30 a few years ago). Now I'll need to purchase an additional TB2 to TB3 adapter ($50) connected to the FW800 to TB2 adapter connected to the FW800 cable. LOL (Cable + 2 dongles)

It's a solid aluminum OWC case. Shame to trash it. Is there a way to swap out the "guts" of the enclosure to update the ports?

I have several OWC quad cases. Why not use USB2 and buy or use a USB cable? More than fast enough for time machine or backups (at least to me).

USB 2.0 @ 60 MB/s?
Ugh, so uncivilized.

At least there is a 10ft USB 2.0 (Type B) to USB C cable at AmazonWarehouse for $5.99 to make it somewhat palatable.

It probably can’t hurt if you might have a future use for a TB3 to TB2 cable anyway, but I wouldn’t buy it solely for that purpose. Better to just replace the whole thing with a cheap 2TB or 4TB bus powered USB3 drive.

Hold on. $25 is 40% of the price of a new 2TB external drive.

OWC had a 8T version of that drive, so maybe the 'guts' are the same.

OWC Support should be able to advise.

For $6 and change, using the box on USB 2 for backups and maybe less frequent storage, it's worth the investment and keeping around.

For $5.99 I got the 10ft USB 2.0 (Type B) to USB C cable. It's worth a gamble.
Grr. That's the price of 2 delicious Chick-fil-A sandwiches.
It's banished to a far corner of my home office while it runs TM backups. I'll see how it goes. Thanks everyone.

Sounds like you've got a plan. But for the future... Potentially. There are "SCSI" shaped USB 3.0 boards, but how easy it would be to retrofit the case depends on the internal design of the case, and the cost probably isn't worth it.

many of those cases are limited to 2 TB. send them a cell phone pic via e-mail of the label and they can tell you.
