“The Orville” season 3 will be the last (in theory)

The Cinema Spot

”I have some unfortunate news for fans of The Orville. Hulu has decided to cancel the show and will not return for a fourth season.

I am still trying to get more details on the situation but from my understanding, the intention was never to make a fourth season. However, we will still be getting the third season.”

Now days, I guess there’s always some hope of the show being picked up by another entity.

I haven't kept up since the beginning of season 2. It used to be on Fox. Behind the scenes in real life Seth McFarlane was dating Halston Sage while and Adrianne Palicki and Scott Grimes got divorced.

Meanwhile, they won't kill Family Guy years after McFarlane mentally checked out.

3 seasons seems plenty. I cant tell if its trying to be serious or not, so cant decide if its a comedy or a drama? But the characters dont seem to be going anywhere?

Sage is now dating Efron.

I liked the stories but could have done without the childish humor.

Maybe, but she IMMEDIATELY ended up with a significant role on Prodigal Son.

Wasn't that the point of the show, Trek with crude humor?

At first I thought that was the idea, but then it tried doing Trek serious stuff?

I only watched 3 episodes into season 2. They were still doing crude humor.

That's about when Halston Sage left FWIW.

They're still married -- Adrienne called off the divorce and looks like they're reconciling.

According to an interview back when; that's how he got it green-lit by the network. They didn't want a s/f drama show; they wanted another Family Guy. So he sold it as Family Guy meets TNG.

The episodes went more towards serious as the series progressed, but there's always some humor (and usually crude humor) in them, maybe for the highlight reels/dailies they'd show to management.

I'm sure this is still a developing story -- Doug Drexler (look him up) has said that the word they're getting is that S3 and S4 are confirmed but Hulu will not commit to anything beyond that (i.e., which they're taking as, tell the story you want to tell by the end of S4).

Someone else could pick it up, but 4 seasons (or even 2 with a solid third season) is a good story arc for the show.

Probably McFarlane's point.

Maybe somebody told him bathroom humor only goes so far outside of a cartoon, and it tried to grow up a bit.

I didn't make it through the first season, the show was such a mess.

McFarlane can't help but pander to inner 10yo boys, of which there will never be a shortage.

It's not even close to being as good or as entertaining as Discovery.

It's probably cheaper to produce though.

McFarlane ought to thank is favorite deity for every season he gets out of that show.

Too bad. It really came together in the second season. Like a modern take on TNG. Less toilet humor. More social-commentary and character-development.

Producer Tom Constantino has responded to the rumor by saying there is "no truth" to it.

Emre Kaya with The Cinema Spot responded with more speculation as to why it could/should be cancelled.
