Nice. Looks like they added the microphone and speaker tech in the 16" MBPR, the new glass display surface tech from the new 6k monitor, improved Intel and AMD chips, and dumped spinny disks.

Oh, and they upgraded the webcam to something as good as LG included in their 5k external USB monitor (that is not apparently discontinued).

EDIT: I think these last-gen Intel Macs are going to be VERY popular and used for decades in some cases.

Sekker,

Yups. The 2020 model and the highest end version of the 2019 model are going to be very popular. Hopefully, this should drive the prices down for the 2019 models, which cna still run Mojave. If that happens, I may grab a refurb 2019 model just like the one I have on my desk at home as a replacement for our aging 2014 iMac. I'll move the iMac to an employee who is using an early '13 MBPr 15" as a desktop.

I'm wondering about the SSD-slotted or soldered?

Some additional information from The Verge:

'(the new camera) can’t unlock the iMac. In fact, despite the new T2 chip inside, the new iMac doesn’t have any biometric login options; there’s no Face ID nor is there a fingerprint sensor. Apple says many of its customers use the Apple Watch to automatically log in.'

'Even though it’s not a big redesign, the fan-favorite option might be the new nano-texture coating, which finally brings a matte option back to the iMac. It adds a $500 premium to the price, however. For that money, Apple says the iMac receives the same treatment as on the Pro Display XDR. So you get the exact same benefits (minimal haze) and downsides (requiring a special cloth to clean it).'

Marty,

You can upgrade the RAM in the 27" 2019 model. The 2020 model appears to be based on the same overall design as the 2019 model. So, my guess is yes. Best bet is to double-check with Apple prior to purchasing just to be sure.

Seems like this is because of the huge rise of Zoom. It could be embarrassing to them because of the low quality of their front cameras compared to higher res on competitive devices. I need a new iMac and I'm torn whether to get this one or wait till the form factor change.

Sure, I get it. But the new camera could have come with a new case too =)

Finding it realllllllllly hard that all 10 trillion big brains at Apple couldnt do both at the same effing time.

Sadly, with no new hardware design Its prob gonna be price for me. if I can get a 2019 i9 with 1 TB SSD for under $2500.. or less... then prob gonna bite. I havent priced it, but Im sure new iron, with the best CPU, mid GPU and 1 TB will be $3000.

Which im just having a hard time swallowing when Im still looking at the same 5K screen as my 2014 iMac.

I guess I could go with the 2019 and invest in a good 4K 32" screen, running the iMac as the second of my 3 screens.

I would have never expected a new form factor for a slightly upgraded iMac.

The nano screen and new camera don't rate a new box.

Not a bit.

I think Apple is saving that for an Apple Silicon Mac.

That is new-box worthy.

And worth a Keynote rollout, unlike this Mac.

My guess is Apple knows what it's doing, and is looking a little more ahead than many of you.

If I were in the market for a new iMac, I'd definitely wait, unless I needed it now.

Typically I want much more than need.

I thought the current iMac was so much nicer than the previous slab sided versions.

It would have been really disappointing to buy one just before the current versions shipped.

It was worth the 'loss' of the optical drive to get tht shape.

I'd wait, and if the new shape wasn't pleasing (or I haaaated it) then there's the previous version at a now cheaper price.

Precisely. I thought this would be self-evident. LOTS involved in revising an iMac case -- definitely not worth the effort for what is very likely the final Intel iMac release.

It is what it is.

I might be interested in a new iMac. I think the iMac PRO is a bit much for me, at this point.

Yeah, Im "needing" new iron =) 5 years is long enough. (and Im getting some video artifacts)

The only big thing I see performance wise on the 2020 vs 2019 is the Radeon 5XXX GPUs. If you peek at the 16" MBPs 5XXX GPU tests vs past MBPs and even iMacs, its significant. Hoping Adobe apps benefit from it?

Id like the faster boot drive (although I dont store anything on it), and potentially a 2 TB NVMe via USB C for client files that I access all day every day. I have two 1 TB NVMe sticks id like try as a RAID 0. =)

The super big cheapskate in me prob wont go 2020.

This is my 2014 vs loaded 2019.

As an owner of this form factor, I think you do NOT want Apple's idea of the 'next form factor'. The size of the bezel is not a problem, the weight is fine, it's beautiful in person.

Apple made major updates to what matters - faster CPU, GPU, camera, and audio (in and out).

And did I mention the matte screen option? Pricey, but sweet.

This machine will BE the pinnacle of consumer Intel desktop Macs, and I believe MRFers will be hunting down these and the 2019 older siblings (that can run Mojave) for years to come.

If you need a new desktop Mac, this model will serve you well for many years and will have some of the best resale value.

The Apple Silicon Macs are going to have a TON of compromises. They might have touchscreens, etc, but I honestly doubt Apple will sell any desktops to truly compare to the 2020 Intel machines in less than 5 years. The Silicon iMacs will look different and work different, but running 2020 code? The Intel Mac will be better.

No, it is not included. You have to upgrade for $30.00 if you want the Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad.
