Fans run hard during zoom calls MBP 2011

MIL's Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro fans run hard during zoom calls.
4 GB ram, 2GHz Core i7, spinning HDD.

Are there any upgrades that will help with this?
Ram? SSD?

I told her to use it plugged in, instead of battery.

Thoughts?

Get a new Mac or use a recent iPhone.

Zoom sucks.

They do nothing to ensure that it will work (or work well) on anything other than the latest/fastest computers with gobs of RAM and a hefty GPU.

Plugging the MBP in or disabling GPU switching in the Energy Saver settings may help a tiny bit, but ultimately the problem is that Zoom sucks.

Steve

yes, to both.

SSD will make it run better than new, and more ram never hurts for day to day overhead.

About $100 for both. SSD first if you only want to do one.

Id go straight to 16 GB, $57: [www.amazon.com]

And assuming shes on the stock drive, and its nowhere near full... you could consider a 256 GB SSD, about $25. Or stick with 500 GB for $47
[www.amazon.com]

and zoom does suck.

I use my spouse's cheap Chromebook for Zoom.

Any Mac laptop I use Zoom makes it sound like an airplane powering up to takeoff.

Zoom is a CPU hog. Hardware upgrades won't change that.

iPads run Zoom even greater if/when you use an earbud headset w/ 'em.

Is your dedicated AMD GPU starting to exhibit issues? My fans ran a lot thru the more recent years on my 2011 MBP when I taxed my GPU with video, then it finally failed (as anticipated). After I modified my MBP to disable dedicated AMD GPU, problems went away. Use it all the time with integrated Intel GPU watching videos on YouTube and movies. Not tried it with ZOOM (will do that later today).

YouTube and movies don't put anywhere close to the load on the CPU as Zoom does.

I'm sure works fine. But how much CPU does it use?

I didn't pay attention. during ZOOM happy hour with my friends we drink and talk, no need to transcode video files or compile massive code projects.
