It's amazing how much better and more efficient we have become at IC engines. This car has a 462 cubic inch V12 yet only produces 175HP.

compression is a big part of it. Roughly 4 horsepower per 100 cubic inches per compression point. so from 9:1 to 10:1 of a 350cid is 14 horsepower. Lots of those prewar motors were down around 7:1 or so.

A lot of post-WW II auto engines were still around that compression ratio, the shift to OHV engines in the '50s and '60s was part of going to higher compression ratios. Cheap, higher octane gas after the war helped with that shift as well.
