Nothing to do with a Chinese boycott.

The Indian market is growing and Apple needs local lines because India has a nasty tariff system.

Inevitable. Diversifying supply chain has been a charge to Tim Cook at every single Apple shareholder meeting for about a decade.

India is making it easy by providing government support.

Will the US ever do the same?

I think it would be great if every company with sales of over $200 million was required to produce/assemble 10% of their products here.

mhmmm....

2027, San Antonio, Texas. Apple factory...

Wide view of container trucks dropping off large containers with palletized cargo.

Interior shot:
Pallets are opened by automated machinery, and broken down into boxes holding the latest Apple iPhone 17. The boxes are plain without labels except for a bar code on the back. Whirring machines feed the boxes one by one into another machine, which automatically prints the cover and other markings on the box, then seals it in biodegradable shrink wrap. Plus the sticker "Final Manufacturing in the US".

Finished boxes are then palletized and robotically loaded into trucks routing to Apple stores across the US.

cbelt is right - any return to manufacturing in the US at scale will largely involve robots and a few tech overseers.

Nice, now we just need to decide on the yearly tax for each robot.
