(MPD just updated it's now more than 20 wounded.)

Declared "Illegal" by D.C. Mayor Bowser.

Fox News
The gunfire erupted at a cookout with hundreds of people gathered outside, a
neighbor told WUSA. Several social media posts advertised the annual “34th-n-EAT”
block party to be held in the area Saturday night with bottles of alcohol and a DJ.
Newsham said a dispute broke out at the gathering and several people produced
weapons and exchanged gunfire. ...
More than 20 responding units, including D.C. Fire and EMS, arrived at the scene.
The street was littered with bullet casings, as well as car keys and other
belongings left behind by people fleeing the gunfire.
...The mayor said the gathering was illegal on a number of levels.
“It is illegal to drink on the street in the District of Columbia; it is illegal to smoke
marijuana on the street in the District of Columbia. It is illegal to be in a gathering
of more than 50 – all of those things are not good," she said. "And, sadly, when
you put illegal guns in the hands of people willing to use them, it means some
person could lose her life or some people could lose their lives."
“As a community, it’s really important that we have zero tolerance for this type of
activity; that we support the Metropolitan Police Department … and that may
mean that people will have to go to jail.”

How did the mayor KNOW that the guns used were illegal?

OR did she ASSUME?

So, governors and majors issue restrictions on gatherings over a certain size. Groups ignore the restrictions, police break up the gatherings and there are no consequences for the attendees. This needs to stop.

If I was a governor or mayor, I'd send in buses to take all participants to a quarantine compound for 21 days.

You would need to corral up 700-1,000 people, and be fighting with drunks/stoned people for a day just processing citations. Then you now have 700-1,000 court cases to adjudicate.

I agree 100%, but the logistics would be a nightmare.

I have 2 tickets I am contesting here in Seattle, from December. Multiple court dates have slipped. I'm going to write the head Judge and demand the tickets be thrown out. 8 months and counting is not a "speedy" trial.

The police have no duty to respond. See Castle Rock v. Gonzales, 545 U.S. 748 (2005) or Warren v. District of Columbia[1] (444 A.2d. 1, D.C. Ct. of Ap. 1981)

You need a license to carry a handgun in DC. Open carry is not legal in DC.
ALL firearms must be registered. DC's gun regulations are almost as strict as NYC's.

So? get them to the quarantine area and process them there. They have nothing else to do as they will be there for 3 weeks.

We need to hold people accountable for their actions. We haven't done so for years and this is one of the major reasons that this country is in the mess that it's in.

then don't look into Sturgis. They need to cordon off the city, and let them fend for themselves.

Racer makes an excellent comparison with Sturgis, unless for some curious reason a huge rally of folks quite literally unconcerned about a pandemic isn’t seen as a national threat that goes way beyond vandalism to buildings.

. Fewer guns would help.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

I've been in western SD during a couple of Sturgis rallies. The bikers are generally well behaved and, at ~ 250,000 people, this year's event will be have ~ half the usual attendance. Granted, in these Covid19 Pandemic times, I agree that it would have been more prudent to skip the rally this year. I'm glad I'm NO WHERE near Sturgis, SD this year. boink smiley

And properly punish those who break the law using firearms. If its a 5 year sentence, letting them out after 8 months is a joke.

So she knew they were illegal guns... how?
Were they all checked against registration by the time she spoke about it? Were they carried openly?

I'm not hardline pro- OR anti-gun... but I'm looking at her words and her declarations.

(I should say, I am PRO legal gun ownership, with responsibility and care)

She's a politician, facts do not matter.
Funny, this block party was declared illegal but she made no such declaration
when over 1,000 "protesters" were setting fires & destroying property just a few
short weeks before.
