No updates.
Battery is probably toast.
Not water resistant.

Mine is useless, I upgraded to a series 4

thanks. probably why it was free ...

assuming it's not quite dead yet, could it be used as a fitness tracking?

one of my kids was saying the PE teacher was asking if the kids had fitness trackers.

Battery isn't TOO hard to swap. What do you have to lose?

My wife uses hers daily. Battery still lasts all day. Get a nice band once you know it works.

Favorite unexpected function is to use in lieu of touch ID on her 12" MacBook that doesn't have TouchID.

Battery just popped the face off mine due to swelling. It's the second time it's happened. First time, it was covered by Apple with some extended warranty. This time, I ordered a replacement battery for $7. Not an Apple battery, but I couldn't find an Apple branded battery for the 42mm. Just want it to hold me over until the 6 is released.

Battery replacement doesn't appear to difficult for me as the face is already open. To open an otherwise closed watch, you need a heating pad to lay over the face of the watch to soften the adhesive. Need to be careful not to use too much heat. Then you need to pry the face off. This can be tough to do without damage as the gap between the body and face is really small.

There are a lot of features the Series 1 won't have because it's old iron, and its watchOS can no longer be upgraded.

Still, for free, except for a charger investment, you can test the waters.

It will do fitness tracking, absolutely.

No fall or A-Fib detection.

And it'll do general notifications as you direct, so you're not always reaching for your 'Phone.

If the battery is still viable, worst that can happen is needing a charge a few times a day, until it won't.

The first one's free.

That's how they getcha.

And if you get got, you can replace the battery (I'd have it replaced) or pony up for new iron.

Yep... you can even have Mickey Mouse tell it for you !
I once woke up to Mickey telling me it was 4 AM. Because our Fat long haired tuxedo cat was snuggling with me in my sleep and had brushed her nose against the watch face and... Switched the face to mickey Mouse
And then bumped the face so Mickey would squeak the time.

I think she just wanted to see the Mouse.

Looks like it needs a battery. put it on the charger and the apple logo comes on after a few seconds, then stays on for a few seconds, then goes off. this repeats ad infinitum.
