Safe?
Yes... that much sugar is antibacterial. (Yes, really...).

Stale?
Also yes...

Verdict: Not dangerous. Also probably not that tasty any more.

I prefer some cookies softer, and even a little "staler". Like Nilla wafers. Or oreos.

I also like some cookies a little stale, like Mother's Iced Oatmeal. I won't buy them just to let them get stale. I would eat most Pepperidge Farm cookies stale, as long as they didn't have bugs.

open and smell. If it smells rancid, toss. Otherwise, I'd eat them.

Solution: take said cookies, stick in a blender, add several scoops of vanilla ice cream (or whichever you prefer), blend until chunky, enjoy.

I think what you intended to say is "that much sugar is a great bacterial growth medium".

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Apparently the more likely concern is mold: [www.stilltasty.com]

Any meat in those cookies? If not, I think you're good.

If it looks good, smells good, I'd give it a try.

But I wouldn't expect it to taste good.

Tossing your cookies isn't always a bad thing.

Those cookies sound like a complete waste of calories. If you're gonna ingest processed sugars at least enjoy it.

Alas, got no takers, as guest brought favorite, fresh, baked goods from Bristol Farms.

Consensus was >99% likelihood of wasted calories in comparison.
Original post was prior to guest's arrival, and without knowledge there was gonna be Bristol Farms in da house.

Wait. You were going to serve 2 year expired cookies to guests in your home? I mean, it's one thing to risk it and eat it yourself. But to serve it to guests in your home? That's not right.

No, we weren't going to blindly serve 'em.... merely offer to serve w/ full disclaimer if deemed safe and palatable by the experts here. Maybe woulda marketed them as "pre-Covid19 safe", and possibly as "tasty".... When they're closer to, or before, their "sell by" date, they're darn good. FWIW, they're either mismarked, or old stock, as they were actually bought around the beginning of the pandemic. Around March-ish, I probably misread 'em as 6/10 of this year; didn't notice the faux pas until late August.

Lesson learned... gotta look *much* closer when cruising the cookie, chip, and cracker aisles.

Not that the thought hasn't crossed my mind, so your asking is appreciated. cool smiley
