New MacBookPro

Just received my new 16" MBP to replace my old 2016 version. Chomping at the bit to set it up but in a first for me, it arrived from Apple with a dead battery. I've never had that happen before.

Have not seen that... Did you order direct from Apple (shipped from China?), or from a reseller?

Wondering whether it sat on a shelf for awhile in a reseller warehouse, letting the battery deplete, in which case it may come back to life if you let it charge for a few minutes and then reset the SMC. (On a T2 Mac, hold down the power button for 10 seconds to reset the SMC.)

I'm hoping its discharged.

Sitting on a shelf makes sense. It was a custom build order so I was shocked when I recieved it so fast. I must have just punched in the options that they had one of in a warehouse somewhere.

I've probably gotten nearly a dozen Apple portables in my Mac-using history, and never once received one with a dead battery. I'll echo Sarcany's question of if you ordered it directly from Apple.com or from a reseller (even if it's Amazon, BestBuy, etc.).

Direct from Apple.

I ordered it Sunday. The original estimate was the 22. Which makes sense. Then ;later on that same day, I got an email saying it was shipped and I'd get it on the 15.

Definitely call them to discuss. I'm not saying it's refund worthy or they'll do anything from that, but you want to have a paper trail, per se, if that battery gives you trouble. (I know it's under warranty) Plus it might help on their end re/supply chain issues.

On the other side of the coin, I have a MacBook Pro (2011) that I've had sitting on a shelf for a month not plugged in, and all the power lights still light up. (I did just replace the old battery with a new OWC battery earlier this year)

Well, it's been plugged in for about an hour now and I got nada. If I hit the power button, I get the red battery charging indicator then it goes away. This sucks.

Unfortunately its what I suspected when I first read the issue. A lithium battery is unlikely to drain all the way to zero while stting.

Especially when all I need is a frickin' label. Have returns accesible in your account. Or have it NOT be locked out with the rest of the store for no reason. Or for crying out loud, just send me a PDF!

Sorry to hear that, but at least they are not having you bring it in for repair.

nothing like a perfect storm of circumstances to shine a light on Apple's @#$%& return system.

Lets start with a DOA laptop. Not OK, but I'll deal with it. It happens.
Call Apple, get a return label. No issue there.
But I don't get a return label. I get an email with a link. A link to a site that is down.
I log into my support page. No label.
I log into my Apple ID page. No label there.
Not to mention that both of those are separate logins that require two-factor authentication and want me to authorize my computer.
So waiting. Waiting. Waiting.
Great. Shows over. Click the link to get a return label. Site loads. Oh, wait. Log in a THIRD time. two-factor authentication. Authorize browser...a THIRD time.
Nope. "Something went wrong". Try again later.
So I guess a gazillion dollar company like Apple cannot do a product launch while at the same time, running a store.
Call Apple. Sorry cannot send you a return label. They can get the shipper to send me one...in TWO days!
So now I just have to keep trying until the site's not busy....maybe. The guy on the phone couldn't tell me one way or the other.

Jesus Christ! I just want to return this @#$%& computer.

I think Apple has lost its edge thanks to COVID.

But even pre-COVID, getting my defective AirPods pro fixed was a PITA.

The good news is that you will enjoy that laptop, once you get one that turns on...!

get them to cross-ship the replacement.

the first 13" MBP that I ordered from them this summer came with one key that had a crap paint job (backlight shone through the key rather than just glowed around it). I called to get a replacement, they wanted me to ship back the first one before they turned around and shipped a replacement. I asked for an advance replacement. The rep had to escalate to a manager, but they approved it. Ridiculous that I had to ask, but glad they allowed it.

End of the day.

Still cannot get a label.

How @#$%& hard is this???

On the phone...AGAIN.

Will ask for an advance replacement.

Hah. That was the problem. I can't return it without a shipping label. Something as simple as a shipping label that Apple is unable to provide me with.

Thought of that. You can only return a computer to the Apple store for a refund. Not an exchange. So that just adds more time. In addition, our Apple store is lcosed due to the COVID.

But. I FINALLY got a label last night. FedEx coming to get it today. And new one scheduled for delivery on the 21.
