Today I acknowledge... Yogurt related.

I am not a "fruit-at-the-bottom" kinda guy. I've eaten maybe thousands of containers of that kind of yogurt and today, it has dawned on me. I prefer blended. Why am I doing the blending? Why? Madness.

I never had yogurt until my first year of college (Alta-Dena Lemon in a flat looking container). Trader Joe's is my supplier nowadays.

The yogurt aisle at the Berkeley Bowl (in Berkeley of course).

I only buy plain whole milk yogurt.

Not Organic, not with any sweeteners, no "fruit" in the yogurt, no little round balls of "cereal", etc. etc. etc...

You get the point. This can actually be kind of hard to find among the mountains of garbage in the yogurt section of the supermarket. It's almost as bad as the cereal section.

I put some of this plain yogurt on some fresh fruit. What more do you need?

Free,

Plain whole milk yogurt is easy to find on the shelves here on Long Island. I prefer Greek and similar style yogusts. My fave is Fage plain whole milk yogurt. The 2% is also very good. Siggi's Whole Milk Plain Yogurt is top-notch, too.

I do like yogurt with flavoring but I have to be choosy abut the type since I'm diabetic. Chobani Less Sugar Monterey Strawberry, Chobani Less Sugar Cinnamon Madagascar Vanilla and Chobani Less Sugar Monterey are very good. Too Good by Light & Fit are pretty good, too. I'm also a fan of Light & Fit since they've got some flavors that are to my liking.

'course, it's also easy enough to add my own flavoring to plain yogurt, too. MIO water enhancer and similar squirts work surprisingly well in plain yogurt.

Greek plain no-fat yogurt and I just add honey. Sometimes I add Aldi's brand of Cheerios (no sugar) and bluebs...

Most if my yogo consumption recently has been Costco Greek style. I use it instead of sour cream, and occasionally ice cream. I will occasionally buy the Trader Joe's flavored whole milk yogurt.

Brown Cow Plain Whole Milk Yogurt is the one.

Add blueberries or strawberries or peaches or a little granola, maybe a dab of maple syrup or honey...or any combination of the above.

Then at dinner time, you're not done. BCPWMY makes a fine sour cream substitute on potatoes, in tacos, mixed in to sauces.

There's some other good varieties out there, mostly locals. I avoid the Greeks because of the acid whey byproduct problem, which really has no good solutions yet.

Every time. Mix it up with granola and cocoa powder, sometime fresh blueberries or dried cherries.

Yes! Was just going to post this. And it's the best you can get. Reminds me of the real thing like you can get just about anywhere except the supermarkets in the USA.

Isn't the plain stuff cheaper? Especially since you can buy a big tub?

My wife buys those and frozen fruits. I love adding cheerios as well, and a little Splenda.

I love flavored yogurt stopped stirring a long time ago.

I am not a savage.

Whatever is on sale at Costco is what goes in the cart.

Does yogurt 'go bad'?

I don't know if I'd got through a 5lb tub before it did, if it does.

But a big tub and some frozen fruit sound like a winner.

Maybe even put it in popsicle molds for frozen yogurcicles.

Yes, it does go bad. Yogurt will usually still be edible from an unopened container for weeks past the "best used by" date, but especially for active culture brands the taste will shift towards more sour. If some stray strain has managed to get in their culture the yogurt can spoil faster even unopened.

Opened, the yogurt from a larger container should be used up within about a week.

Personally I like fruit on the bottom types or will get a quart container of plain or vanilla Greek style to add my my own fresh or frozen fruit to. I have to look through the brands when getting vanilla, some add too much sugar.
