Jetpack Guy returns...

...over a mile high this time.

The crew of a China Airlines reported a person who appeared to be flying a jetpack at about 6,000 feet above the ground, seven miles northwest of LAX, about 1:45 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating the report along with local law enforcement.

Such incidents are considered a major safety threat, given the chance of collision between the jetpacker and jumbo jets above densely populated Los Angeles. It's also a mystery, because no jetpacks are known to be able to safely fly so high or far.

Saw some speculation that it might have actually been one of these.

LAX being so close to El Segundo, this makes me wonder whether Elon Musk has something new up his sleeve...

It is what it is.

I'd bet money it couldn't.

Martin Aircraft was trying to market a device that might be loosely described as a jetpack, but it's a stretch. It was a bundle of massive turbofans that was more like a small helicopter that you strapped into. The intent was to market them as an emergency vehicle to rescue high-rise fire victims They flew it, unmanned, to several thousand feet and deployed a parachute to show that it could safeishly return to the ground in the event of a mechanical failure. I think the company folded a few years ago though.

We conduct all our engine and flight testing as well as pilot training at a purpose built facility near Moorpark, CA about one hours drive north west of LAX.

Surprised anyone can read it and see the specs. Very poor site design and choice of font for lettering.

Those numbers were copied and pasted from the site. BTW, it looks O.K. on an iPhone, haven’t checked it on my Mac.
