Why is it against the law to kill squirrels?

I’m pretty sure in TX you can’t kill squirrels or maybe it is poisoning that is illegal in states. But the knitters are so destructive and enuf. They won’t be endangered.

You can't make friends with a squirrel. Squirrels are just rats with cuter outfits.

In GA it’s the same. You had to “remove” them, so I transported (at different times) 2 or 3 as far as I could until I got bored driving with a caged squirrel in the trunk. Supposedly they can travel a few miles back to their territory, don’t ask me how, but crossing water is a challenge. I dumped a few in the park, behind a gas station. One didn’t survive the journey, which begged the question of why go thru the hassle. Pretty sure none of that was terribly legal either.

I seem to recall however an option to drown them, not that I had any interest in torture.

We also had the occasional chipmunk in our neighborhood. Somehow one got in the house. I think a door was left ajar? By then I had an assortment of Havahart traps and he walked in. That one I relapsed to the yard. No one can harm a chipmunk!

I recovered a few dead Chips and Dales from our pool at the old house. I think they fell in then couldn’t climb back out sad smiley
If you have an outdoor cat, you generally won’t have many chipmunks.

Saw a hawk sitting on a hay bale the other day. At first I thought it was a dog. Not a small bird!

Maybe it has to do with hunting squirrels for food, i.e. it's illegal to kill them if it isn't Squirrel Season? I've seen my cousins almost come to blows over the last piece of my Aunt Margie's fried squirrel, so there are people still around who really do eat squirrel.

Before anyone asks, no, I didn't try any. Like Cornish Game Hens, too much work to eat for very little reward in my book, especially when there was deer on the table as well.

All depends on the state, the situation and also the method. Shooting with a firearm may require a hunting license or may be restricted based upon the property. Using a pellet gun, slingshot, bow or other means may be acceptable. If they're damaging crops, there may be an exception.

It depends on the squirrel and the location.

In Washington, you can kill Eastern Gray squirrels, an invasive species, in any quantity by any means. But Western Gray Squirrels are a protected endangered species. You can't tell them apart though until you flip them over to look at their belly...so good luck with that. California Ground Squirrels/Belding squirrels are also unlimited harvest, open season year round. Flying squirrels and Fox squirrels are protected. Curiously, chipmunks are protected in Washington too?!?!! You need a PhD in environmental science and a law degree to navigate hunting laws in WA.

Bet they’re not red squirrels. Small, but aggressive, and have a real knack for trouble.

Edit: Here in MN, we have a small game season with limits, and of course, local laws about discharging firearms in the city limits, etc.

But if they are a “nuisance”, it’s pretty much open season anytime.

OP question - hunting rules. If you really want to have fun in the south, go wild hog hunting. No weapon limits, no bag limit, and BACON !

We have a long standing family of squirrels living in the back yard. The dogs take care of the slow ones. The cats sit in the windows and dream about eating all that yummy rodent. The squirrels harvest the acorns from our oaks.. at least the ones the deer do not get. And the squirrels aerate the lawn digging all their nut hiding holes.

It's all good.

Which is a question I often ask myself, usually in whimsy.

We had squirrels infest the attic of a residence house I lived in during one year of college. The idiot maintenance people put traps in our attic, but after a few days I went up to look and they had neither baited nor set the traps! Like the squirrels were going to see this steel contraption and be so curious, they'd push through the spring-loaded door to get inside. We put peanut butter in them and caught a couple immediately. After a couple of calls to the maintenance dept. went unanswered, we drove them a few miles away and set them free. They finally came and sealed up the attic, after one of them didn't realize you aren't supposed to step between the beams and left an enormous hole in our ceiling.

We have enough feral cats in the neighborhood that we've never heard of any problems with squirrels here. I see some in the trees around my house, but I wouldn't consider them a nuisance.

If you want to kill them then I assume you would also be willing to pick up random seeds and distribute/bury them all around the place in their stead?

Nope. They're tearing up my yard planting berries from a Holly tree in the neighbors yard. Once I get some pellets, they'll be added to the weekly trash.

Gray squirrels have taken up fence chewing in my backyard.

One morning it was so loud, that it actually woke me up!

I should get a dog. They're allowed to kill rodents.

One chewed it's way into the attic of my parent's house when they were on an extended vacation. It worked it's way down to the false ceiling of the downstairs bathroom and was chewing the insulation off the wires to the lights. If I hadn't found the damage, it likely would have started a fire. Somehow it drowned in the tub. I triple wrapped it in plastic bags and put it in the freezer. Ended up in the yard/kitchen waste recycling during the next pickup.

You’re trespassing on their land. I guarantee you their ancestors were here many centuries before yours got here. So maybe you should cut Rocky and his kin a little slack.

I'm with August. I've never had squirrels cause me a lick of trouble. Feral cats are way worse. We had raccoons in our garage once, but big deal. I think they ate some dog food. People here complain about the geese. Their previous habitat is full of McMansions and parking lots, so where do they go? I can live with the goose poo so that they may survive.

Our GA suburban house had large trees. Every day they’d jump onto the roof. It was annoying at night, you could easily hear them running around. Sounded like inside the attic, except with the insulation up there that couldn’t have been it and I never any evidence up in there. At different times I once caught two by placing a trap onto the roof. They ate deck railing, the Weber’s handle and so on. And that was when they weren’t noisily in the gutters and chewing on the house.

If I knew now what I didn’t know then I’d have electrified the gutters using the electric fence we use here for horses.

Edit: No, I’d have electrified the trees instead. Noisy sumbitches, too up there.
