OT: making a doll...
Posted by: bazookaman

So my boss wants to make a doll (based on one of my designs) for an upcoming tradeshow. Not a lot...maybe 10-15. Problem is, i haven't the foggiest idea of where to start looking for something like this. Any ideas?

stuffed cloth, like a pillow/plush, or hard plastic, or wood?

If cloth, use a photo-transfer sheet and then iron onto a poly-cotton blend fabric and then assemble and stuff. Shops that do t-shirt transfers could probably do the printing on cloth for you .
If he wants a more complicated design-- or a porcelain or vinyl type doll, you will probably need to have it jobbed out. It may be pricey.

My first thought was plastic or a hard rubber sort of thing....

Make one out of clay or hard wax (hire someone that can sculpt, that is).

Make a rubber mold of the original.
Split the mold in half.

Use that mold to cast a two part plastic or rubber compound...

A rubber mold probably won't last for dozens or hundreds of parts, but I think you could get away with 10-15 pretty easily.

And I'm just relating what I've read from a home-shop machinist type board... I've never actually done any rubber molds or plastic casting.

If you wanted brass/bronze "dolls", I'd be better able to guide you...

I was kind of picturing it as a stuffed animal type deal. I suppose if thats the case, i could look for local seamstresses (seamsters?)

Actually, i'd like it to be difficult to dissuade the boss from doing it to begin with.

Wurm;

Nope...
I'm just practicing restraining myself... at least when posting from work.
