OT: Any plans, ideas for PVC monkey bars for kids?

I'm thinking of using 1" Schedule 40 PVC for some kids under 60 pounds, but there's one kid who'll be here some of the time who weighs about 70+. I wonder if 1" is heavy enough.

Galvanized pipe costs too much and I couldn't find any Schedule 80 PVC.

Also, does anyone have ideas for other kid activities in the backyard for this summer that don't cost too much to build.

Just a really thorough unbrella policy with high liability limits.

I've tried that. (PVC)
1. seems to get brittle in the sun.
2. If water gets in and freezes, it breaks. drilling drain holes weakens it and it cracks/breaks.
--------------------------------
I built a swing set from presuure treated wood. (not cheap, mat'ls. nor labor/time)
I hung a tire from a tree with a rope.

Guess which one got used more ?
( Yup, the simple tire)
Edit: memory-loss, the tire was replaced with a well varnished plank due to rubber "skid-mark" complaints. (and it smelled like a 'tire' )

I cut the lawn around that damned swing set for years before I got fed up and took it apart.
--------------------------------
Of all the things I built in the backyard, the 10x16 clubhouse was used the most.

(It now houses a riding mower and tools)smiling smiley

Ha! Too funny Jimmypoo!

PVC doesn't sound like a good idea. There has to be some affordable metal piping. I made a pull up bar from some sort of cheap metal pipe from Home Depot. It's about 1" thick and threaded. They also had various elbows and end pieces that mount to a wall or floor.

Actually, Jimmypoo's insurance comment is right on the mark.

The boys and their friends were really into boarding.
The board park was way up in the north end of town.

I was all set to built a "mando" (?) or way cool half pipe eight feet high in the back yard. Had the plans/ mat'l costs all set. Yard all marked/staked out for the footings and stairs, when I talked to the homeowner's agent regarding neighbor hood kids risk.
3 grand, even with keep out signs and a fence. And that was until/if someone got hurt.

I really wanted to build it, too.

I guess you're right about the PVC in the sun. I think I'll make a sandbox and a tent using the blue tarp and PVC for a frame.

This place is all pine trees with nary a limb for a swing. I think I'll make an A-frame swing set out of treated lumber.

Wooden ladders make a good swing set support.
One up one side with a couple rungs cut off for access to one horizontal (say, six feet off the ground to hang off of)
One horizontal to hang/climb across.
Then another one on the other side.

You'll need to add a bit of A-frame to each end ladder on each end to keep it from tipping over if a swing and/or rings on chains are suspended from it.
Skids under the A-frame with wedges cut on the end will make it easier to move cutting the grass if you can't stand the tall grass near the wood.

I made mine like that.
A slide was procured from a neighbor throwing an old rusty swing set out.
The slide was the only thing not rusted.

Badminton keeps some kids occupied.

Horseshoes are apparently back.
I helped my brother build two pits.
Younger kids might be better off getting bonked with plastic/rubber ones.

A clubhouse is a great place to throw all that crap into while cutting the lawn.
Plan ahead. smiling smiley
They 'outgrow' stuff so damned fast !

No matter what you do, you're gonna hear "there's nothing to do". Make them help.
It'll take longer.

I've made some stuff with pvc, but slid wood into the pvc to give it more strength. It lasted pretty well under rough conditions. You guys are probably right about it not being the best for that situation though. When it shatters it could probably kill someone. kj.

PVC, you must be crazy. That will break with any stress from kids hanging on it. I recently laid 1" PVC pipe in the back yard. I also replaced some 3" PVC for the pool pump(about three months ago). Both have very thin walls and they will break.

fill them with structural foam and you should be fine. Your local automobile manufacturing plant has some.

Oh wait! No one here buys American cars - thus no local plant.

Sorry.

If your trees are close enough together, lots of kids would enjoy a big net hammock.
