All those "happy" people that appear on TV after meeting their soul mate on eHarmony. Fact or fiction?

<Fact or fiction?

Neither... Marketing.

I might check it out, since it's 2:24 am and for some damn reason, I'm not sleeping...

I have three set of friends who met that way. They are all quite happy with each other so far. Of course they do not give the percentage of folks who enroll in their pricey program for 3-6-9 months and never find a mate/SO.

A friend of mine often entertains me with tales of someone she works with who has been advertising herself on eHarmony for months. So far the only dates have been with "losers" (her perspective anyway.) I wonder if the success rate is higher for younger people? That woman is in her mid-50s.

I don't know about eHarmony specifically, but I know 3 people who met on J-Date and are either engaged or already married. I also know several who have been on there for years and are still looking.

I have to imagine dating is dating- sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. How you met the person becomes secondary. That said, eHarmony claims to do this big in-depth profile that helps guarantee success. Obviously, I don't put too much faith in that.

I do know that several of the bigger online sites were charged with setting up "ringers" among the ranks. This way they could assure that EVERYONE had SOMEONE interested in them.

My friends have been badgering me to sign up for J-Date. You can see I am a BIT reluctant... smiling smiley

Someone I know has used them all.

she has equally disappointing results with all of them. Not in terms of sex.... but she'd rather meet guys this way than hang out at bars.

Otherwise...... lotsa up front money for the same as Match/Yahoo, etc.

NY Times had an article this last weekend on J-Date. ..seems there was a lot of requests to make it "brokeback mountain" friendly. . .

so soon (or right now) you can find mates of the same persuasion. . .

they will ask you for the sex of the mate you are lookin fer. ..now that is progress. ..

J-Date is a subset of MatchMaker.com

She also used those.

you can crossover from one to the other. That's how I met her 6 years ago. I was on MatchMaker, and she crossed over from J-Date and wrote me.

I was going to sign up, but when I emailed support asking where to indicate my marital status, they suggested that their service wasn't for me.

3d, there is quite a difference between "a couple of cats" and eleven... and the fact that they're watching... always watching...

You need to brush up on your skimming skills. It's thirteen cats. Besides, I have a wee suspicion that that personal is not 100% serious. But you guys knew that already, right?

Mike S, yeah, I wasn't paying too close attention... and yes, I had assumed it was not 100% serious, but... it's somewhat representative of what's out there.

So she doesn't have +10 cats??
Only one way to find out. Who's gonna reply to her ad and ask her?

No guts, no glory.

I do have a cat (note: "a" cat. One.) because I am a single female in my 30's and apparently that is some type of law. The fear of becoming a crazy cat lady is so strong that I once hesitated before agreeing to foster an abandoned kitten.

Adding my dog to my little family restored some balance. smiling smiley

Forget the Craigslist ad... who's gonna respond to dmann??

Who needs eHarmony, JDate, Match, LavaLife, etc.. when there are a bunch of single eligible people right here on the forums. Dmann, setup a "group dinner" in your neck of the woods. You'll have all sorts of suitors lining up (and flying in!) to meet you. heh smiling smiley

3d-
Hey, this is my safe haven! I don't need to wear makeup, do my hair or find cute clothes. I can say pretty much anything I want and not worry about it later.

Why do you think I'd rather hang out on here with you guys than go meet real guys in person? smiling smiley

"Who's gonna reply to her ad and ask her?"

I guessing that her is an awfully big assumption at this point.

Locally the radio has been full of ads for "It's Just Lunch" dating service. They set you up and manage the lunch reservation details.

Ogling is OK...
By Jeff Ritter
February 1, 2006

The eyes, apparently, still have it.

Like anyone still playing the dating game, Long Island singles have many options for those awkward first dates - e-dates, speed dates, blind dates or the old-fashioned dinner and a movie.

Now a Manhattan-based Web site (www.eyegazingparties .com) offers a radical new idea: Why mince words when you can just sit there and stare?

It's called "eye gazing" - a spin on speed dating that provides the rare opportunity to ogle sexy singles without fear of police intervention.

Founder Michael Ellsberg said he hosted eye-gazing parties in Manhattan after tiring of the monotony of trolling the bars for companionship.

"I kept getting into the same conversations again and again," he said. "It's like a resume conversation."

Eye-gazing parties are simple - not to mention free: Partygoers are paired off and instructed to maintain eye contact for three full minutes. Blinking is allowed, talking is not. When the stare session expires, partners trade off until all have switched and met (read: "gazed at") each member of the opposite sex for the allotted time. And then, who knows? You may establish a meaningful relationship. Visit the site and click on "Got Gaze" - there is a screening procedure.

Rosensweig also maintains a singles blog and asked his readers if they wanted to try eye gazing. Responses varied from "I think it's cool!" to "Sounds kinda creepy."

One anonymous blogger went so far as to warn readers of the dangers of trusting a man with enticing eyes, writing, "Guys with gorgeous eyes have been known as serial killers."

My college roommate used to go to the front gate of a women's prison on parole day. He had a 100% average.

I've actually used yahoo, match and eharmony at one point or other.

I found match to be the best because it had the most people.

The problem with eharmony is that its expensive so there isn't as many people on that site. You do meet women that you have more in common with. However, it takes forever to find a match, unless you are in a big city.

Memberships with the big ones (match, yahoo) are free for looking, you'll have to pay if you want to contact someone.

Good luck

Marriage is a turkey shoot.

No damn website is going to change that. The person you marry today is not the same person you will be waking up with in 10 years.

The people who are married the longest are the greatest compromisers.

I sit on a man’s back, choking him and making
him carry me, and yet assure myself and others
that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his
lot by all possible means — except by getting off
his back. - Leo Tolstoy, novelist and Philosopher

Marriage is what you make of it. You have to put in the SINCERE effort to try hard, etc. If you don't do that, there is no chance it will work out.
