That's a creative description ... sounds like the Dual Layer burning is 16X, but it's not.

# 48x CD-R write speed
# 24x CD-RW write speed
# 16x DVD±R write speed
# 4x DVD+R DL write speed
# 4x DVD+RW write speed
# 48x CD-R read speed
# 32x CD-RW read speed
# 48x CD-ROM read speed
# 16x DVD-ROM read speed

Only does +R dual layer, and only at 4X.

.... and it's a refurb.

Well tim, seeing as there isn't any 16X capable dual layer media around what does it matter?

I have no problem with the fact that it's a refurb since that means that each and every drive has been individually inspected rather than 1 in 1000-5000 off the regular assembly line that gets checked at random...

What does a FireWire/USB DVD/CD external enclosure go for these days?

There isn't anything wrong with not being a 16X dual layer burner ... I was just pointing out the possible ambiguity.

For me, the issue would be that it only writes to +R dual layer. My DVD player seems to work better with -R dual layer.

As for the 1 in 1000-5000 comment you made, you must be referring to the QC sampling?

I really found the geeks PM-525C2-EPB at $22.99 in alum case and internal power supply works with my nec3550 and Asus dvd burners. They show up on Toast 8. They came with no feet. Fans are facing down internally and blow out back. I added "gummy feet" to add space between the two units to add cooling. You can pull the plug on the light bar, though it is fairly subtle. I'm running both on firewire...no problems..geeks says short supply..
