HELP: PowerBook, Airport seems dead
Posted by: space-time

I had this powerbook for 2 1/2 years now without any issues. Last night I used it and it worked fine. I shut it down. Now the airport does not see any WiFi routers, while form my wife's iBook I see at least 5 (inluding my router). When I try to make a computer-to-computer network, I get an error. Looks like the OS can see the Airport card, but the card itself is not functional.

I restarted a few times, used a different account, zapped the PRAM. I repaired permissions, I checked the drive with Disk Utility and it is OK. What else can I do before I call AppleCare?

Thanks

Assuming your wife's iBook uses the same type of Airport card, try swapping them and see what happens.

I think they are both built in, I don't think it can be swaped that easily.

PowerBook G4, 15", 1.5 GHz (low resolution model, 1280 x 854)

iBook G4, 1.33 GHz, 14"

What I might try is boot the Powerbook from the iBook's hard drive in FW target mode.

Well, this works. I am posting from the powerbook right now (booted off the iBook drive).

So the hardware is OK. I hate to do a reinstall, but it's better than sending the powerbook to Apple.

before I reinstall, any other ideas? shall I delete some preference files? which?

Thanks

Usually that kind of stuff can be fixed by repairing permissions and installing a combo OS update.

What version of the OS are you running?

10.4.8

I fixed it. What I did, I made a new network port, and it worked. Then I deleted the old Airport, and renamed the new one to "Airport", ann all is OK now.
