Coffee drinkers, what brand/model of coffee pot do you have?
Posted by: M A V I C
Date: November 19, 2007 01:46PM
I used to just buy the $20 ones for drip coffee. Then I learned about the whole ~200°F temp thing, and have been learning more about the health issues related to how coffee is brewed.

So now I'm looking for one that brews at proper temps. The high end ones are the only ones I can find the proper specs for. I don't care about fancy clocks or anything, just brewing coffee well.

What do you guys use?

Chemex, which means I boil my water in a kettle and pour it myself. I don't know if an automatic coffee maker exists that will make coffee as good.

I remember recently reading one of the comparisons on coffee machines. .. turned out that an inexpensive maker, I think it was Mr. Coffee or Krups, made the best tasting coffee, even compared to expensive machines. . .

Oh my, what have I missed? Anything that seriously interferes with my theory that if you have to worry about the brewing temperature you're drinking too much coffee?

I have an el cheapo Mr. Coffee for my couple of cups a day.

We drank a lot of french press on our ~40 day long road trip this summer. Had some nice organic coffee... of course we had to grind it before we left.

Yes, I'm very picky about good coffee, so brewing temp is important. We also buy coffee at the local organic co-op.

Simple coffee press (nissan to be exact).

put grounds in, pour hot water in, wait 5 minutes, press plunger and serve.

You could cold brew the stuff: put coffee grinds into any jug type container. Fill with cold water, still a few times and leave overnight. Voila, cold brewed coffee -apparently a new NY fashion item. It is surprisingly nice even with real cheapo coffee. Pour direct from jug into another jug - the grinds sink so you can safely pour about 85-90% of the coffee without any grinds in it.

Ditto use hot water direct on coffe grinds in anytype of jug device. Leave it sit for about 5 mins total. Stir at the beginning and at about 2-3 mins. The grinds settle. I often just put some coffee grinds direct into a mug and fill with hot water. At about 1/5 left you got to be careful you don't get a mouthful of grinds but it works and is quick and easy.

No, this is the part I was referring to. I understand the variations in beans, grind, and brewing. Ya don't own a coffee shop for 10 years without picking up on that part, but I'm curious about the statement regarding health issues. That one I haven't heard anything about.

Bodum Santos. I've tried a few since but keep coming back to it. The only caveat (for me, anyway) is that it's hard to keep clean.

how does a percolator work? I looked at one at lunch time at Frys. $99.
Those are all I remember from my childhood. And, since I just tried/began drinking coffee two weeks ago, I'm a noob.

But, wouldn't MORE of the coffee flavor come through in a percolator since it keeps perking up, over and back through the grinds/grounds?

Mavic,

I have a Senseo at home and my office. My parents have a SimpleHuman Pod Brewer at their house. Currently, I'm looking for a _very_ small, no-mess coffee maker that can handle two mugs to leave at my girlfriend's house. She doesn't drink coffee and doesn't own one. Needless to say, I need to rectify this situation for the times I stay at her place.

I'm pleased with the Cuisinart. I'm a big coffee snob, too.

The Toddy cold-brew is delicious too, if you have the time.

To heck with those yuppie coffee makers. My Farberware percolator can make a cup of coffee able to strip paint.

Are you familiar with the chemical changes in beans when they're roasted? Similar, but based on the temp the water is at. It also depends on the composition of the components. Sometimes the plastics & metals leach and that's not good in itself, but it's also not good when it reacts with the coffee.

A friend has a Senseo model and we liked it other than it doesn't brew enough and the coffee is rather expensive. Plus, IIRC, his filters were bleached. We also like to know exactly where our coffee came from, plus we grind our own.

I have a French press I got from Target. It beats the heck out of what I was getting from the Mr.Coffee machine. At the moment I am also using Dunkin Donuts coffee beans and they are really quite good.

The grinder I have is also from Target.

I'm no coffee expert but according to Modern Marvels' coffee episode, percolators make the worst coffee. You do not want the water going through the grounds more than once because instead of more getting more coffee flavor you get more of the bitter, nasty stuff.

Golfer,

I had two bunn pod coffee brewers. The build quality seemed neither better nor worse than machines that were vastly less expensive and they brewed very weak coffee, regardless of the circumstances. I returned them both and wouldn't consider buying another one. Ever. They can definitely learn a lesson from Simplehuman when it comes to design. Although I love my Senseo and is my favorite of the single-serve pod systems, the design of the SimpleHuman is nifty. Very nifty.

So what is with the temperature? What is optimum? 200 too hot? Just found a maker while unpacking. Unfortunately is the furnished apt. one and not my Braun.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your Bunns. Don't know much about their pod brewers, they didn't have that line when I worked there. I don't drink coffee myself. When I started working where I do now, they used Mr. Coffee machines and had to replace them every 3 or 4 months. I got them Bunns (home model line machines), and and they tend to last around 10 years. Never heard a complaint about not getting good coffee from the guys that do drink coffee. Of course, where not talking about using special grounds, flavors and other stuff, just plain black coffee for the working stiffs. smiling smiley

Golfer,

I hear ya. Sounds like they used the regular brewers and not pod brewers. I don't use anything special. Just pods I can get from coffeewhiz.com, i.e. Wolfgang Puck Jamaica Me Crazy, Cafejo Adrenaline Explosion, etc.

[en.wikipedia.org]
Water temperature is crucial to the proper extraction of flavor from the ground coffee. The recommended brewing temperature of coffee is 93 °C (199.4 °F). Any cooler and some of the solubles that make up the flavor will not be extracted. If the water is too hot, some undesirable elements will be extracted, adversely affecting the taste, especially in bitterness.

I buy mostly organic or fair trade beans, grind up enough each morning for my brew (takes a couple seconds). Grind goes into a Melitta coffee filter and I pour hot water over it.

Makes pretty darn good coffee with little expense. Bought the Krupps grinder about 17-18 years ago.

Best coffee i remember tho, was what my mother made in the old double boiler, back when I was growing up. With Maxwell House, no less.

Cheers, Blooz

You might not believe it, but after owning several different makes and models of coffee machines, I have settled on the Gevalia drip maker (standard 12-cup model), that I got for free after buying one pound of their marginal beans. It brews directly into a carafe and there is no hot plate--perfect! I get a full pot of hot coffee, drink what portion I want at my pace and no bitter, overheated, smelly mud!

I have looked for similar designs in the krups/braun/Mr.Coffee lines without luck, just in case my cheapie machine conks out, but haven't found any. I would not purchase another machine that did not incorporate the carafe after using this one.

How is that? (possible) Why is that? Did they say why? How does bitterness know not to get in the water during just the first pass?

After years of using a Bunn Commercial, I tried a H-B BrewStation, which several folks here or @ the old place had recommended. It does a very good job and best of all, has NO glass carafe. You can get one dirt cheap at MarBeck.com. $30 + Shipping [www.marbeck.com] {It's the discontinued white model which sells for $50 elsewhere.}

For special occasions, I have a stainless Sunbeam electric vacuum pot {$13 off fleabay}. It's the forerunner of the Bodums. Makes superior coffee but like the Bodum it's a PITA to clean!

eh, too much time/effort/cleanup for a cup of coffee. I'll buy a cup at a local shop on a daily basis before I'd do that.

Seems like most of the other options people are mentioning don't list their specs. The HB model looks interesting, but says squat about what temp it brews at.
