Old habits die hard -- pre-Mac OS X habits lingering in Mac OS X

Every so often while using my Mac at home or at work, I notice that I still instinctually
indulge in pre-Mac OS X behaviors although they are no longer necessary. For
example, if I want to access files on a volume, I usually double-click on the volume's
icon on my desktop instead of using a new window and sidebar to get to that volume.
Even having volume icons on my desktop is a vestige years of old-school Mac use
(BTW I started using Macs in 1987).

I'm not alone in this, am I?

Still catch myself hitting CMD-N when I'm attempting to create a new folder...

My fingers still type Cmd-N in the finder to create a new folder, since they've been doing that for 20 years, and you can't teach old fingers new tricks, even though that creates a new Finder window now instead of a folder.

I want a new folder from CMD-N, too.

Surely it wouldn't be hard to reverse CMD-N and CMD-SHIFT-N, no? Off to search in the shareware jungles...

I hit command-N when using windows machines sometimes too.

But I'm glad I don't have to swap floppies after booting up the OS any more...

I've certainly done the CMD-N thing countless times, but have very nearly completely
retrained myself after several years of using Mac OS X full-time.

I think I'm MOSTLY over the CMD-N vs CMD-Shift-N.... mostly..

I still find myself clicking and DRAGGING down menu's rather than single click and drop it down...
That's an O-L-D habit!

The last of my OS 9 habits that I consciosly kicked was going to the Apple Menu for stuff.... most of the stuff I used to use the Apple Menu for is now done by the Dock or side-bar shortcuts.
Been a long time since I pulled the Apple Menu down by mistake though.

I am completely used to CMD-Shift-N. What I found interesting was the other day, when I had to use the old 6400 which is running 8.6, I used CMD-N to create a new folder without even having to think about it.

I still complain about speed. I did that all the time when using Systems 6,7,8,9.

not me - I don't even cmd-n by mistake anymore...

in fact, when I have to do work on an OS 9 machine, I spend a lot of time just staring at it waiting for my knowledge to drive me forward - but it often doesn't...

Oh yeah... I gotta 2x click a folder to get a finder window... oh yeah, I gotta go to the finder to restart... I'm amazed at how much I forgot about 9...

That's the one I still can't give up and use FruitMenu for. For me, it's a lot easier than using the Dock and Finder windows. But even back in the OS 9 days, I used FinderPop to add features that FruitMenu does now.

I've got a server at work running 9.2

I can't tell you the number of times I have dragged the mouse down to the bottom of the screen to get the dock to pop up... I check over my shoulder to make sure nobody was watching me, and giggle.

I use FruitMenu more as a replacement for some features from Now Menus/System 9 era
than as a way to customize the Apple Menu. I love to control-click anywhere and bring
up a nice jazzed-up super customized contextual menu, all thanks to FruitMenu--one of
the many reasons I haven't gotten around to upgrading to Leopard yet, despite it sitting
in its package on my desk, waiting patiently for me.

If you know exactly where you're going in the menu it's actually faster to do it that way since you don't need to click twice. Just click down to open the menu, move the cursor over the item you want and release all in one movement. Believe me, you do some things enough times and you'll find every little way to get them done as fast as possible.

I'm over the Apple-N thing, although I think it was a mistake to make that change in the first place. At least the Apple-Shift-Delete thing still works.
