Where were you on Dec. 7, 1941? (if born before'41)

I was sitting in mother's bedroom watching my mother give a friend a "Charm Curl Home Permanent". Since my step-father was Japanese it hit home hard. He was at the hospital making Sunday rounds. Of course we called him immediately and like the rest of American were in disbelief.

Went to church with my family. LA.

An Army reserve officer, my dad had been called up a over a year earlier. He had been in charge of all west coast camouflage of all important targets. ( Airports, Lockheed, Douglas, etc.) Didn't Washington know?. Sure. Very proud of my dad. He won the Legion of Merit. He also served in the Aleutians and CBI, China and India.

In Silver Spring, Maryland, in my second year, blissfully unaware of the "day that will live in infamy. . ."

I remember the end of the war, though, VJ day. It was bright and sunny, and everyone went out and blew their car horns.

I was born on November 9, 1939, so was around at the time at home with my mother and dad in the little oil field town of Kilgore, Texas. I have no idea what we were doing as I was only two years old.

And where have you been, samintx? I haven't seen a post from you in a very long time. How are things up there in East Texas?

I listened to Roosevelt's speech on the radio. At 2, I didn't understand much of it.

The concept of reproduction may have just been occurring to my dad at the time (He would have been 11).My grandfather, OTOH, probably went to the CD the next day. Eventually became Sherrif / Civil Defense for the duration of the war (He was a WWI veteran).

My parents hadn't met, but did in Honolulu two years later.

My mom's parents lived in a little house near near Scholfield Barracks in the middle of Oahu. When their yard got shot up, her mother ran out to get the laundry off the line because it was GI's laundry she did for income. My uncle was in his Model A Ford near Schofield. The car was hit in a strafing run, but he was ok. Hid underneath the car, but the plane didn't return.

My dad was stationed on Maui. After the attack, no supplies got to Maui for months. No food, no gas, nothing. Fear ran high that Maui would get attacked too. His stories were pretty interesting.

I was 1 and 1/2. No clue. I do remember waving the flag at a parade in 1945 though. Now, where did we have lunch - and what?
