you do know HD-DVD is well done, don't you? as long as you plan to keep a player around, that should be OK.

Of course it is now, since I got it in January for twice that price. But, it was a birthday present. If you don't have it yet and have an HD DVD player, it is well worth buying.

You do know he knew that with the "buzzard alert", don't you?

Oh...

That's a great set of DVDs. I've seen the BBC broadcasts in HD and they're stunning. Sooooo much better, much more detail than SD-DVDs. If I were one to track down all the various HD-DVD bargains and buzzard alerts, it might be worth getting a "give-away" HD player.

But I'll wait 'till BD gets cheaper.

just an FYI this is the Discovery version that has Sigourney Weaver narrating (the one that aired on the Discovery Channel) NOT the original british version with David Attenborough narrating. . .apparently some people seem to care which version they get. . .just so you know. . .

FYI: netflix DVDs (SD format) feature David Attenborough narrating

I wonder why they changed the narrator on these DVDs, what, US audience cannot understand British accent?

. . .not sure about narrator. . .but I believe I read that the Discovery version is recut to allow for commercials so shorter and different music. . .

the original is 530 minutes, the american version is 480 minutes. . .

found this:

Also, the american version has extra featurettes:

Only adding to the differences between the Discovery Channel and BBC/Warnerversions of 'Planet Earth,' Discovery offers a suite of four bonus featurettes (on both the Blu-ray and the HD DVD). Not that they're easy to find -- Discovery hasn't labeled them on the packaging, and they're practically hidden in a far away corner of the first disc. The only way to find them is to start an episode, then bring up the pop-up menu, and then click the "Extras" tab.

Anyway, as for the content itself, there are four vignettes totaling about 35 minutes: "Technology" (6 minutes), "Extremes" (9 minutes), "Danger" (9 minutes) and "Capturing the Moment" (10 minutes). Together, these pieces form a nice, compact little mini-doc, featuring talking head interviews with the main 'Planet Earth' producers, and with each featurette having a concise theme (self-explanatory by their titles). Also included in each featurette are some cool split screen outtakes and "night cam" footage, showing some of the complications the filmmakers faced -- not only due to the terrain and creatures they were trying to photograph, but the HD technology itself.

Though a combined 35 minutes wasn't nearly long enough for me, these four featurettes offer a nice glimpse at the passion and perseverance it took to complete 'Planet Earth.'
