How to get gasoline smell out of leather shoe?
Posted by: Dennis S

I was talking to a friend at the gas pump and overfilled my tank. My leather shoe, which is almost like suede, but still basic leather, got soaked. It doesn't look like the kind of shoe you would want to get wet. What to do?

Is "kinda screwed" the same as "screwed."

Well you could set a match to it... But won't it just evaporate?

One time my friend spilled a gas can in his back seat, let it air out for a week and also applied a few bottles of febreeze, I think that helped.

I know Flux-Off works as a fair degreaser on leather shoes, but I imagine gas permeated a bit beyond the surface.
It should evaporate eventually.

The smell eventually will dissipate. You can speed it up by airing the shoe out, keeping it in the sunlight, and possibly using something like Febreeze once the major amount has been dried off. But it will take a few days to a week.

Another vote for dissapation.

Keep it were it will get fresh air and won't affect anything you care about.

Oh, and open flame.

sunlight, open air. Let it dry, wash it out with a solvent based hand cleaner, let it dry. Repeat as needed for a week or so.

Or just go get a new pair of shoes.

Reminds me of the OB-GYn when my eldest was born (in kind of a hurry)

"Congratulations. It's a girl. And you owe me a new pair of shoes."

(He didn't have time to put his little splat booties on, and they got all gunky.)

Leave it outside for a few days, it will dissipate. I wouldn't introduce any cleaners at all unless it leaves a severe stain. Gasoline is already a strong solvent, so it will probably evaporate completely, and hand cleaner will have some sort of lanolin or equivalent in it that will certainly stain suede.

Suede shoes benefit from a wire brush cleaning from time to time.

Yes, cleaners will stain leather. I know the hard way after recently ruining a pair of shoes I really loved. Sigh.

Light it on fire, all of the gasoline smell will leave the shoe in the combustion process.

You could try to mask it with something else

Jimmy might have some left over from an earlier thread.

It'll evaporate on it's own, but in the meantime you might as well have some fun with it. Hold it up to your nose and inhale deeply! Wheee!
