What to do with a dead G5 dualie?
Posted by: Rain
Date: May 28, 2008 08:08PM
dual 2.0 G5 has been sittin in the closet for several months now.
I was unable to get the machine to boot consistently and replaced it with an iMac.

Do I part it out? Toss it up on eBay? Start replacing components in hopes that it comes back to life?

Thanks
Rain

Depends how much time you have to troubleshoot. Sell it half-working and it's not worth much. Are you able to get it back to bone-stock and eliminate all 3rd-party variables?

Yea, snatched all the RAM out early on in the trouble shooting.
Dropped it back to the original hard drive.
Tried booting from OSX cd/dvd.
Tried diff. pairs of RAM.
Pressed reset buttons.
Did everything but wipe the drive and start from scratch.

Now that I have everything backedup and on the iMac I guess i could wipe a drive and try installing the OS on it.

What does it do and how much time do you have to spend on it?

If you don't have time, you might fetch a fair amount on ebay, depending on how well you present it and what it actually does.

I want to get into G5 repair, but there are so many incompatible models it's almost impossible...

Maybe a new battery is all it needs? I had a Dual G5 that would shut down on me randomly, and sometimes not let itself boot back up for hours. I even bought a new PSU to install, thinking that was it. Turns out a new $5 battery from OWC fixed it right up.

Of course, if you do need a new PSU for it, let me know! I never took this one out of the box. Keep thinking I should Craigslist it, but just haven't gotten around to it.

Epilogue: I shipped that G5 to a teacher friend who needed a machine, and UPS "lost" it the day it was scheduled to arrive. Last status was "On truck for delivery". They paid me $1200 for it. Should have insured for more.

Take it to the Apple store and have them diagnose it.

If I recall from your original description of the problem, it sounds like a CPU or logic board problem.

Is there a non-Apple but Apple authorized computer repair shop nearby?

The Apple Hardware Test probably won't find anything but ASD (Apple Service Diagnostics) might. If ASD finds the problem, at least you'll know what part you need. The catch is ASD is only available to Apple technicians. You can sometimes find disk images online though. I don't know if I have the correct version for that machine but if you can't find anything, PM me and I'll send you what I have.

And if I didn't say so before, SORRY about the problems.

Hey there!
Yea, its one of those things that just happens. 2 decades of Apple machines in my office and this was my first failed box.

Good chance the powersupply is full of dust. Its never been cleaned out far as i know.

But yea, from what others said last year - could be logic board.

Not sure if there is an authorized repair shop down here on the coast.
Apple have a database of em?

I got about $200 for a dead g5 1.6 (needed a new processor) on ebay. no drives, RAM, video, nothing. Just CPU, case, mobo, fans, PS, etc. You'd be surprised what people are willing to pay for "junk".

If it isn't the dust. ASD may not find the problem.
I really suffered with 2 different macs that had strange intermittent issues. They both eventually had their logic boards replaced by Apple out of warranty. It was only because I had documentation that showed that I had many calls into Apple while both of the machines were under warranty. One of them actually had ASD run on it which did not pick up any issues. I will from now on assume intermittent issue = motherboard issue and not let Apple run me around and around. It was ridiculous how many times they had me pulling out all of my ram (and PCI cards in the tower) and reinstalling the system.
I agree that if not the dust, this is the perfect thing to eBay and save yourself further headaches unless you have the money and a lot of time on your hands.
