Not the worst thing I've seen, but pretty discouraging. That's a nice looking Pee-jot -- my old dad always used to say that it's cheaper to fix 'em than replace 'em...

Yeah, we were both in the car at the time. Only doing about 5 mph coming up to a pedestrian crossing and a car came out of a side turning and hit the back. Unfortunately what should have been a minor prang was made worse because he mistakenly floored the accelerator instead of the brake and he swung us 180 degrees and rammed us backwards into the end of the railings. In the picture the person on the left is in the road and the b****y Volvo is on the pavement. That top bar of the railings actually extends into the back of the car another 18 inches gouging a nice hole along the side of the new stereo system we had just bought!

Fortunately no-one hurt but I've been told the car is a right-off. Insurance are dealing with it and a courtesy car will appear tomorrow. The old boy who was driving the Volvo admitted fault to us, the witnesses and the police when they turned up to direct traffic.

Glad you and Mrs. VDP are OK. I hate buying a new car too. Good luck to you in your search.

Sorry about the car, but you're unhurt and looking for a new car is better than a stay in the hospital.

Sorry to hear about the loss of the car. I'm dealing with a car on the fritz right now myself.

I thought most people were pleased to get rid of Peugots. They were BLOODY HORRIBLE cars here in the states.

Are you familiar with the Yugo?

Was wondering that as well.

voodoo --- you like wagons, good. You can now get the vehicle I want but cannot get here in the States: Honda Accord Tourer. The one coming out in September isn't necessary; the current generation would be fine for my vicarious purposes. Post a pic when you get it, thanks.

I heard the last Yugo became a Maytag three years ago.

There was a guy down the street from me that repairing peugots was his specialty.
Closed his doors about three years ago. There's a Dunkin Donuts / celphone strip mall there now.

I drove around in a rental Vauxhall Vectra for a few days when I was in London back in 1999, seemed pretty nice. Do they still make those?

The Peugeot suited our needs and has been a great car for the last four years. It is the top of the range diesel so if needed is good for almost 130mph (German autobahns) with all the goodies like electric seats, AC, SatNav and an excellent sound system. It has averaged 50mpg (40mpg US ?), has been extremely reliable and very comfortable. It replaced the previous model (405) which was written off by another idiot breaking the speed limit and ploughing in to a stationary car and causing further accidents. We had that for a few years and they have to be reliable as the estate version is probably the commonest car of its age still seen regularly on the roads, great workhorse.

We will be trying a variety of models, we're thinking along the line of Volvo, Saab maybe Alfa but the latest version of the Peugeot, the 407, will still be on our list of possibilities.

We rented a 407 wagon for our trip to Normandy and Brittany. It was a nice car. The only thing I didn't like was how a 500 ml bottle in the drink holder would make reaching the shifter difficult.

And €1.50/liter for diesel was painful!

Most fastfood places have special bucket-cups with small bottoms to fit in standard size cupholders.
