SShould I buy Apple laser 16/600 @$100+ or get free LaserWriter II?

I'm not sure of the suffix on the LWII. A friend said he would give it to me, but it may be a month or more before I can get it.

I have a 16/600 spotted. I need the real PostScript and need it to work easily with several different Macs I have. I know very little about printers, but I know I'll never buy another Brother.

I assume if I get the free LWII, I probably wouldn't want to put much money into it. Would the 16/600 be a lot better printer? (I've heard all the good things about the 16/600)

I could stand to print as many sheets as I can afford toner for, but I could have lots of printing done offset. Duplexing would also be nice.

Get the 16/600..

I had a IIg that worked very well for several years...
They're very slow by todays standards, and they have PostScript Level 1, whereas the 16/600 has PS level 2.

And, only the LW IIG has Ethernet (or possibly the IIF did also....).

Yes, it would be a much better printer. Faster, much faster. Probably much cheaper on the consumables too it has the same engine as several HP printers. Has no problem in networking. Probably can take much more RAM as well. Fill it up.

I third the 16/600. LaserWriter IIs came in several flavors so you may not even get one that's networkable without an adapter and/or card. And it is slow and noisy and HUGE. Plus, I suspect it eats up a lot of electricity. My workspace became a lot quieter when I got rid of mine and replaced it with a Samsung ML-1710.

Another vote for 16/600. Make sure you're getting one with a low page count and maximum RAM (shown on the startup page).

16/600 or LW Pro 630 are what you want.

Low paper count is like what? 60,000 pages printed? ;)

Yeah, a LW Pro 630 is what I'm using and thanks to Harbourmaster, I now have max ram and it's network-able... Works great... A little loud so I just turn it off until I need it... A little larger than I wish it was... However, who cares because I got the printer with a new box of toner for free and then networking cable & ram for under $10.00...

Anything under 100,000 I would consider LOW. I think the engine is rated at 500,000 pages.

It's a MULE, no doubt about it.

drinking smiley cheers

The Laserwriter IIf dd not have ethernet. The Laserwriter IIg has built in ethernet. These were both 4 pages per minute, 300dpi printers with photograde. Slow by todays standards but both workhorses.
