Do You take a written test when renewing your Drivers License in Ca.?

Have an appointment to have my drivers lic (sp) renewed today. And it just dawned on me that I may have to take a written test. Is that the case? Are there any online places that may have example tests that I could practice and learn the correct answers, and distances to stop etc.

You can get two renewals without taking a test (5 years each), but then you have to take the written test again.

Here for details (in the middle, "How to renew your driver license by mail" ) :

Sample tests:

So far I've taken four written tests over many, many, many years.

One was my first test, the second was my motorcycle endorsement, ant the last two were texts by mail.

I haven't taken a test in the last 10-15 years.

Sadly, any driver should be tested far more regularly than that, along with an actual *driving* test. But that's too expensive for the state.

And in the end we *and* the state pay a higher price for that.

I went in to change my address 2 months before my license came up for renewal. They made me take the written tests (car and motorcycle) and take a new photo. It was about 12 years since I had last taken a written test.

The crappy thing was they voided my current license. I made the mistake of going to the DMV before the bank to change my address, so I had to wait until I got the new license before the bank would let me make the change final.

in tha 510.

I had to go in for a renewal six months ago (seemed like the first time in at least 10-15 years that they didn't just renew me by mail).

All that was required was a vision test, finger print, new picture, and writing a check.

I actually found a question once on the CA DMV test that had two correct answers (should only be one). I sent a letter to the DMV, they thanked me and said that I was correct. I wonder if they ever changed it on the test?

Have never had to take a written test again. 52 years old.

After 70 years old you do have to take a written test every 5 years.

Many times they just are trying to ascertain cognitive skills.

If they feel you might have issues they can require a driving test, but it is not required at that time, and people can arrange for one of the old people driving school.

Amen Brutha! I have always thought everyone should have to be fully tested for each renewal. Just because you could drive well 5 years ago doesn't mean you can today. And laws change every year. So what if the cost of a renewal goes up to $100? If your insurance goes down $50 a year, in 5 years you are $150 ahead, and much safer on the road as well.
