Trader Joe's-- best cheap red wine?

I had a chance to stock up on wine from a Trader Joe's and grabbed a few bottles fairly at Random . . . thought I'd try here for some focus for next time. All's I know is that I generally like french and spanish wines, hungarian/italian in a pinch . . . australia, argentina, chile tend to be OK.
I know little about California wines but have formed a fairly negative impression over the years.
Also, everything's 2008 at the moment-- barely seems like the past yet.
Was that an OK year for California/european/southern hemisphere wines?
Thx . . .

I just uncorked a bottle of 2008 C.S. Cabernet a minute ago, sipping it now-- not bad.
Unfortunately time travel was not available when I was at TJ's so I believe I paid at least $4 for it.

For everyday "sippin'" wine, I recommend the Franzia Merlot in boxes. Depending on the State you are in, it comes in either 3 liter or 5 liter boxes. Either box is around $12.00. The same goes for Almaden Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.

This is not wine meant to impress any wine snobs here. Just good, cheap wine for daily consumption without killing your budget. Sip in moderation or your liver may be at risk.

Flame away . . . I can take it.

You could also go to your local CVS and buy Oak Creek Cabernet for $3.99 (sometimes it's 2/$3.00). It's remarkably good especially for the price.

Box wine doesn't go bad either, if you don't finish a bottle in one go.

At Trader Joe's, I'm a fan of the Merlot/Malbec blend by Panilonco ($4.99 I think). Then for $3.99 there's the La Boca Malbec. I've taken quite a liking to malbec. The only ones I've had which weren't very good were, ironically, the costlier ones (+$10).

There's a TJ's $4.99 Cellier du Rhone red (cotes du rhone) that I've grown rather fond of.

It's hard to go wrong with a CdR.

And 2008 seems way too young to be drinking cab.

South African wines are a great buy. I would also look at Tempranillo from Spain if you like Cabs. Look for a 100% tempranillo and not a blend, although the blends are fine, they are just harder to reproduce if it turns out that you really like the wine. Tempranillos lay down very, very well so if you find something you like buy a few cases for the years ahead.

South African wines are a great buy.

South Africa produces wine from Pinotage grapes. It has been called the "chemical wine" for it's nasty smell.

Some of these newer wine producing countries do dumb things such as growing Riesling right next to the Chardonnay, terroir be damned.

Be careful.

????? no other varietals? not true, the SA growers tried to imitate the French so they plant all the usual suspects, with varying results. They have excellent climate, grapes and wineries, however, so I'm not sure where you are getting your information.

this may be true, but it's very difficult to know (or care about) any of this when one walks into a shop and if the wine is to your liking, you really should not care whether or not this is true.

Lately, I've been buying a lot of Livingston Cellars wine. $4.99/magnum or $9.99/gallon at my grocery store. Really enjoy the Rhine Wine or Sangria in the summer and the Merlot and Cab. aren't too shabby - for the price.

Yeah, they do produce other varietals, but the Pinotage is best avoided.
