General PeeCee question: Getting data off the HD.

I've got my friends Laptop here, it had Windows XP home on it, with some corrupted system files, and some bad spots on the HD, so XP won't boot.

I need to get all the data off of the HD before I reinstall Windows(And linux) for him.

I currently am using a Damn Small Linux live CD, which isn't going well.

It's mounted the NTFS partition, but I can't figure out how to get the data off and onto my G5.

I can't get it to mount my External HD(200GB) even if it's FAT32, and I can't use FTP because I can't have it FTP an entire folder.

Thanks In Advance.

Chip

Just because it has two clutches, shifts faster, uses a torque converter or has near-infinite gear ratios, requires less driver intervention and is more efficient doesn't make it better in my opinion.

good luck.

I had NT 5 and Panther seeing each other, but not talking.

Seacrest clued me into the cure for a WORKING install of Win2K, and that was to engage ftp in panther and FTP via any peecee ftp program, directly to the Mac.

That was the only thing that worked despite Samba running and seeing. Neither system would shake hands.

Why can't you ftp a folder, if you can get into it?

I'm not sure, I can try again, maybe it was just because it was a mount point, not a folder.

Why would you want to reinstall anything on a drive with bad spots?

I realize it will format around them, but that's a pretty big warning flag, don't you think?

Hmm, finally got the GUI one to work, it seems to be doing the job...

You could try to reinstall XP overtop of the corrupted one. Or you could boot from the restore CD and select "Repair Installation" or something like that. Should leave the data in place. Another option would be take out the drive, install it on one of these:
[froogle.google.com]
and attach it too another computer as an external USB drive. There are lots of ways to skin this cat.
